  1. Multiple Positions Open at Nordic Centre of Excellence
14 PhD Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship Positions
    Climate-Cryospheric Interactions

The Top-level Research Initiative (TRI) seeks candidates for 14 PhD
student and postdoctoral fellowship positions in climate-cryospheric
interactions. The fellowships are all associated with the Nordic
Top-level Research Initiative (TRI) and its Centre of Excellence on
impacts of a changing cryosphere--depicting ecosystem-climate feedbacks
as affected by changes in permafrost, snow, and ice distribution
(DEFROST). The PhD positions are available with terms of three or four
years at universities in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The postdoctoral
fellowships are available with 18-month terms at universities in
Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.

The Top-level Research Initiative (TRI) is a joint Nordic initiative to
strengthen research and innovation regarding climate change issues in
the Nordic Region. The DEFROST initiative seeks to understand how
climate change induced changes in the cryosphere influence the ecosystem
processes which directly affect climate.

  1. University of Florida seeks Field Crew Leader
Climate Change Impact on the Boreal Forest
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The Ecosystem Ecology Lab at the University of Florida seeks a crew
leader for remote field research. The tentative field season is 30 May-5
August 2011, with potential for continued work in the fall. The position
is based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Research will focus on the effects of climate warming and an
intensifying fire regime on the boreal forest plant composition and
structure; permafrost stability; and carbon and nitrogen pools. The crew
leader will oversee a field team of three to four undergraduate students
and work with the faculty, postdoctoral students, and graduate students
collaborating on the project.

The primary responsibilities of the crew leader include organizing and
conducting field sampling, processing plant and soil samples, and
entering and compiling data. The research is field intensive and
requires camping and hiking in remote areas. Applicants should be in
good physical shape, prepared to deal with rigorous work in sometimes
difficult conditions, and capable of leading and motivating a team. A
strong work ethic, love of the outdoors, and interest in ecology/biology
are preferred. Travel to and from Alaska, housing, and food while
camping are provided.

To apply for this position, please send letter of interest, resume or
curricula vitae, and the names of two references to Heather Alexander
(hdalexander [at] ufl.edu).
