Organizers of Session A4.1, "Accurately Quantifying Changes in Sea Ice
Using Satellite Remote Sensing," announce a call for abstracts. The
session will be convened at the Davos Atmosphere and Cryosphere Assembly
2013, scheduled for 8-12 July 2013 in Davos, Switzerland.

Session organizers invite contributions, which advance discussion of
questions such as:

- How important is snow depth on sea ice for sea ice thickness
retrieval in the Antarctic compared to the Arctic?
- How accurately can snow depth on sea ice be retrieved?
- How accurately can processes of sea ice melt, growth, and ridging;
snow ice formation and snow metamorphism; and sea ice freeboard
flooding be observed from space-borne platforms?
- Can current knowledge gaps be closed by synergistic combination of
multiple satellite sensors such as amsr-e and quikscat or smos and
cryosat-2?

Each abstract submission will be charged with a non-refundable handling
fee. Travel grants are available.

    U.S. CLIVAR Sponsored International Workshop

The U.S. Climate Variability and Predictability Research Program
(CLIVAR) will sponsor an international workshop entitled "Understanding
the Response of Greenland's Marine Terminating Glaciers to Oceanic and
Atmospheric Forcing." It is scheduled to convene 3-7 June 2013 in
Boston, Massachusetts.

CLIVAR is a U.S. national research program investigating the variability
and predictability of the global climate system on seasonal,
inter-annual, decadal, and centennial timescales, with a particular
emphasis on the role the ocean plays in climate variability.

Organizers of the workshop seek to bring together oceanographers,
glaciologists, and atmospheric and climate scientists working on all
aspects of the problem related to the widespread retreat and speedup of
marine-terminating outlet glaciers in Greenland over the past two
decades. This process has led to a doubling of the ice sheet's
contribution to sea level rise and increased the freshwater input to the
North Atlantic. Its coincidence with a period of oceanic and atmospheric
warming suggests a common climate driver. Progress on understanding and
parameterizing the mechanisms behind these dynamic responses in climate
and ice sheet models requires a collaborative, international,
cross-disciplinary, and multi-faceted approach.

A whitepaper initiated by the U.S. CLIVAR Working Group on Greenland Ice
Sheet Ocean interactions (GRISO) serves as background to this workshop.

    Climate Change in Northern Territories

Organizers of the conference entitled, "Climate Change in Northern
Territories: Sharing Experiences, Exploring New Method,s and Assessing
Socio-Economic Impacts," announce a first call for abstracts for general
participation and young researchers. The conference, organized by the
European Observation Network (ESPON)/Evidence in a North European
Context (ENECON) in cooperation with the Northern Research Forum (NFR),
will convene 22-23 August 2013 in Akureyri, Iceland.

The ENECON project addresses challenges and opportunities facing
territorial development and spatial planning policies, and practices,
particular to the vast territory of the very northern part of Europe.
The goal of the conference is to turn attention to territorial
challenges and the need for future research in the northernmost regions
of Europe and the Arctic; and the challenge of translating scientific
knowledge into action. The conference aims to bring together researchers
who have similar backgrounds but focus on different problems and
different methodological approaches. Regional and local stakeholders as
well as state politicians and policymakers are also target groups for
the conference.

Subthemes of the conference include:

- Territorial socio-economic impacts of climate change,
- Methodologies for assessing socio-economic impact, and
- Adaptation to climate change in regions and local
communities--examining methods and sharing knowledge.

    28th Lowell Wakefield Fisheries Symposium
    26-29 March 2013
    Anchorage, Alaska

The deadline to submit abstracts to the 28th Lowell Wakefield Fisheries
Symposium, entitled "Responses of Arctic Marine Ecosystems to Climate
Change," has been extended. The new deadline is Saturday, 15 December
2012. The meeting will be held 26-29 March 2013 in Anchorage, Alaska.

The steady loss of arctic sea ice in recent decades is perhaps the most
obvious sign of a warming planet. Far less obvious is how individual
marine species--from arctic cod that live just below and sometimes
within the sea ice, to seals, whales, polar bears and ultimately
humans--will respond to the loss of sea ice and other consequences of a
warmer Arctic.

This symposium will bring scientists from around the world to share
their research on how arctic marine ecosystems are responding to climate
change. Topics for discussion will include:

- Observed and anticipated environmental changes in the Arctic.
- Lower trophic level productivity of arctic waters in a changing
climate.
- Marine fish resources of the Arctic in a changing climate.
- Observed and anticipated responses of arctic birds and marine
mammals to environmental changes in the Arctic.
- Effects of changing arctic marine ecosystems on humans.
- Understanding and managing arctic marine ecosystems in a time of
change.

The symposium aims to advance understanding of present and future
responses of arctic marine ecosystems to climate change at all trophic
levels. Organizers encourage contributions that focus on collaborative
approaches to understanding and managing living marine resources in a
changing Arctic and to managing local, regional, and global human
responses to changing arctic marine ecosystems.
