British Antarctic Survey seeks Researcher

The British Antarctic Survey has a vacancy for a glacier geophysicist.
The appointment is open-ended and will be based in Cambridge, United
Kingdom.

The researcher will join a team studying the processes that control
glacial flow, with particular emphasis on conditions at the bed of ice
streams and glaciers. Earth's ice cover has a significant influence on
oceans and climate, and understanding its dynamics and evolution is a
prerequisite to assessing its future impacts. The team uses a number of
geophysical techniques, including seismic and ice-penetrating radar
systems, to study glacial and subglacial conditions, to produce detailed
maps of sub-glacial bedforms and basal water distribution, and to derive
the physical properties of sub-glacial sediments.

Applicants should have a strong academic background, an enthusiasm for
fieldwork, and an adaptable and innovative approach. Position
responsibilities will include:

- Helping plan and undertake fieldwork, initially in Antarctica,
using radar, seismic and GPS equipment;
- Processing and interpreting data; and
- Publishing results in scientific papers and at conferences.

The successful applicant will also be involved in analysis and
publication of existing datasets and in the development of research
proposals for future work in both polar regions. Fieldwork will
initially be on the Larsen Ice Shelf, east of the Antarctic Peninsula
during the 2012/13 field season, using seismic and radar to map the
ocean bed beneath the ice.

University of British Columbia seeks Faculty Member

The Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia (UBC)
invites applications for a position in biogeography at the level of a
tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor. The
position will be based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The successful candidate will have research interests that extend
existing departmental strengths in biogeosciences. These include
ecosystem-climate interactions, global environmental change, physical
hydrology, biogeomorphology, and riparian and freshwater ecosystems. UBC
particularly welcomes candidates with interests in environmental
reconstruction and/or ecosystem modeling (e.g., species range dynamics,
landscape interactions, and land cover change). An interest in research
and teaching related to the human dimensions of environmental change
would be an asset.

Applicants should have a PhD in geography or a closely related
discipline, and a proven record of excellence in and genuine commitment
to both teaching and research. The successful applicant will be expected
to maintain an outstanding program of externally funded research,
scholarly research leading to publication, teaching in the undergraduate
and graduate programs (biogeosciences and environment and
sustainability), graduate supervision, and service.

Umea University seeks Postdoctoral Researcher

The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at Umea University
seeks a postdoctoral researcher in plant ecology. The position will be
based in Umea, Sweden.

The successful applicant will work on a project that aims at
investigating the impact of reindeer on tundra vegetation, and the role
of these land cover changes in Arctic Summer Warming. The project will
study the interactive effect of herbivores and climate on plant
community composition and plant traits; and also study the link between
vegetation changes, NDVI, and albedo, and link these results to large
scale patterns using remote census techniques. The successful candidate
will, depending on interest and competence, work on one of several
well-defined projects within this field, but there is also room for
independent projects. Fieldwork in the Fennoscandian tundra will be a
significant part of this position. The postdoctoral researcher will be a
part of the Nordic Centre of Excellence-Tundra and Northern Studies, a
strong research environment at Umea University, and will be expected to
interact with researchers from these two environments.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in an ecological discipline or
equivalent, not more than three years old. Knowledge about arctic
ecosystems, plant-herbivore interactions, NDVI, and albedo measurements
would be an asset. Documented capabilities of autonomous scientific
research work, skills in writing scientific publications in English, and
an interest in collaborating with researchers from other scientific
fields are required. International candidates are encouraged to apply.
