- AWI seeks Postdoctoral and PhD Student Applicants
Sea Ice - Atmosphere - Ocean - Ecosystem Interactions
Bremerhaven, Germany
The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar- and Marine Research (AWI)
invites applications for both a postdoctoral and a PhD position, in the
framework of the Helmholtz Society-funded research program entitled "Sea
Ice - Atmosphere - Ocean - Ecosystem Interactions." Both positions are
limited to three years, and will be based in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The arctic climate is currently in a state of rapid transition which is
exemplified by the marked reduction in sea-ice cover. A quantitative
understanding of the role of the ocean in the system and the connection
of these changes with the global ocean circulation is lacking. AWI
maintains long-term observations of the Arctic Ocean circulation that
will be analyzed to understand the relevant mechanisms of the ocean in
the climate system and the impact of ocean changes on the ecosystem.
The successful applicants will work in a team that combines observations
and numerical modeling for investigating the interaction between the
Arctic Ocean, atmosphere, and sea ice. The special focus of these
positions includes processes in the shallow arctic shelf seas and the
central arctic basins, as well as the exchange of waters between the
North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Work in both themes is embedded in
international programs and for both topics a comprehensive set of
conventional and new technology data is available which will be extended
by ongoing observation programs. The candidates are expected to
participate in scientific cruises in the Arctic.
For the postdoctoral position (Reference 17/G/KL), AWI seeks a person
holding a PhD degree in physical oceanography or related disciplines. An
excellent physical background and experience with data analysis are
necessary. Experience on cruises and/or in numerical modeling is
desirable.
For the PhD position (Reference 22/G/KL), AWI expects completed
university studies (Master's degree or equivalent) in physics, physical
oceanography, or meteorology; and a deep interest in understanding the
high latitude climate system.
Completed applications must include the appropriate reference number,
and should include a curriculum vitae, copies of relevant certificates,
and a publication list. Application packets should be sent to:
Alfred-Wegener-Institut fur Polar- und Meeresforschung
Personalabteilung (Human Resources)
Postfach 12 01 61
27515 Bremerhaven
Germany
Application deadline: Saturday, 9 April 2011.

- Norwegian Polar Institute seeks Terrestrial Ecologist
Biodiversity Research
Tromso, Norway
The Biodiversity Research Section at the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI)
seeks a terrestrial ecologist. The position will be based in Tromso,
Norway, with the possibility for extended periods of placement at the
NPI office in Longyearbyen on Svalbard.
The successful applicant will be responsible for performing field-based
research programs in the Arctic (and possibly also the Antarctic) that
are relevant to the institute's mandate. The job includes planning
research programs, writing grant applications to help support the work
financially, conducting research in the field, analyzing the resulting
data, reporting the results to NPI's databases, and basic reporting and
administration of the research program. The research activities are
expected to result in an active publication record in journals of high
international quality (peer-reviewed). The successful applicant will be
responsible for conducting NPI's reindeer monitoring program in Svalbard
and for providing advice and performing tasks related to management of
terrestrial ecosystems.
Potential candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent experience and/or
education) with a background in population biology and ecology.
Expertise in statistical analyses, the ability to publish in
high-quality international scientific journals, and the ability to
secure research grants must be documented. A willingness and ability to
work in multidisciplinary research groups and practical experience with
fieldwork in polar regions are important qualifications for this job.
Experience with mammalian systems, particularly ungulates, will be
viewed positively.
Applications must be submitted electronically, by clicking on the 'Apply
for This Job' link at: http://www.jobbnorge.no/job.aspx?jobid=73217. All
relevant qualifications and experience should be outlined in a letter of
application, directly on the electronic form. A curriculum vitae
including a complete publication list should be sent via the electronic
site as an attachment. PDFs of the applicant's best/most relevant papers
(five max) can also be attached. If electronic application is not
possible, please contact Kit Kovacs via email (kit.kovacs [at] npolar.no) and
explain the situation. Materials may be accepted (no later than the 15
April deadline) via email or post:

- University of Helsinki seeks Postdoctoral Researcher
Plant-Soil Processes
Helsinki, Finland
The Peatland Ecology Group at the University of Helsinki and the Finnish
Forest Research Institute seeks a postdoctoral researcher to work on
plant-soil processes in peatlands under a warming climate. The position
is for three years, and will be based in Helsinki, Finland.
The successful applicant will participate full-time in a project funded
by the Academy of Finland, entitled "Plant-soil Processes in Peatlands
Under a Warming Climate." This project will investigate the impacts of
warming and water table level drawdown on:
- Carbon gas exchange between ecosystem and atmosphere;
- Above- and below-ground carbon inputs into the soil (quantity and
chemical quality);
- Organic matter decomposition; and
- Allocation of carbon within the system.
The project includes a considerable amount of field work.
Interested applicants should have a PhD with research experience in
ecology or comparable fields (e.g., biology, forest sciences,
biogeochemistry), and have knowledge of vegetation, carbon gas dynamics,
and northern ecosystems. Other qualifications include the motivation to
carry out field studies, experience in analyzing complex data, and the
desire and proven ability to prepare manuscripts for peer-review in a
timely manner. An understanding of process modeling and/or organic
chemistry, as well as experience in labeling experiments are desirable.
The preferred start date for the position is April-May 2011. Interested
applicants should send a cover letter (please reference code 400-41-11),
curriculum vitae, brief statement of research interests, and the names
and contact information of three references to:
Finnish Forest Research Institute
Box 18/Jokiniemenkuja
01301 Vantaa
