  1. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory seeks Fellowship Candidates
    Earth Science
    New York, New York

The Earth Institute and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (EI/LDEO) seek
applicants for the 2011-2012 Marie Tharp Fellowship. Fellowship awards
may used to pay salary, research, and travel expenses over a three-month
period during the time span of September 2011 through August 2012 and
must be taken in residence at one of the earth science units of the
Earth Institute at Columbia University.

The competition is open to junior and mid-career scientists in the earth
sciences. Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application. The
goal of this award is to promote women in science. Full-time or adjunct
faculty and researchers at Columbia University are not eligible to
apply.

Applicants should submit a proposal that includes a description of their
proposed project, the name of their collaborator at Columbia, a
curriculum vitae, a proposed budget that follows the guidelines
available online (website below), and two letters of reference. It is
strongly recommended that applicants contact their Columbia
collaborators prior to submission.

A committee of scientists and administrators at EI/LDEO will review
proposals. The criteria for selection will be based on scientific
excellence and potential contribution to EI/LDEO research activities.
The following specific points will be considered: quality of scholarly
record as evidenced by publications and reference letters; feasibility
and quality of the proposed research as evidenced by the research
proposal and reference letters; and relevance of the proposed research
to the LDEO/EI research activities as evidenced by the research
proposal.

Application materials must be submitted as a single combined PDF
document via email to Kuheli Dutt (Kuheli.Dutt [at] columbia.edu). Incomplete
applications will not be considered. References may be included in the
combined document or sent separately, via email.

Application deadline: Thursday, 31 March 2011.

  1. Alfred Wegener Institute seeks Applicants for Helmholtz Groups
    Polar and Marine Science

The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research seeks
applicants for up to 20 positions in the 2011 Helmholtz Young
Investigator Groups involved in the Polar Regions and Coasts in a
changing Earth System (PACES) research program. The funding term is five
years.

The Helmholtz Association seeks to promote talented young scientists by
providing career opportunities as investigator group leaders in
association with one of their 17 research centers in Germany. Topics of
research include:

- Modern modeling approaches in the research of the earth system;
- Observation and formation of scenarios in polar oceanography;
- New approaches for combining observation and modeling in
glaciology;
- New approaches for combining physical, biogeochemical, and
biological sea ice research; and
- New approaches in coastal research in temperate and polar regions.

As group leaders, successful applicants will be expected to develop and
sustain close contacts with a partner university in their field of
research and assume the same rights and responsibilities as those of a
junior professor. The groups must perform scientific work for both
partnership institutions and may be based at the university, a Helmholtz
center, or at both institutions.

Applicants must have completed university education in physics,
geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, geology, biology, or an
equivalent field. They also must have earned a relevant PhD, additional
scientific achievements, and have experience in teaching and raising
external funds.

Application deadline: Thursday, 31 March 2011.
Thursday, 10 March 2011 is preferable.

  1. SCAR and COMNAP seek Fellowship Candidates
    Early Career Antarctic Research

The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Council of
Managers of National Antarctic Programmes (COMNAP) seek applicants for
six early career fellowships available to researchers, engineers and
other professionals in the Arctic and Antarctic during 2011-2012.

SCAR announces opportunity for four fellowships in 2011. These
fellowships are designed to strengthen international capacity and
cooperation in Antarctic research by encouraging early career scientists
and engineers to undertake Antarctic research at an institute in one of
the 36 SCAR member countries.

Supported research topics in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean include:

- Antarctica in the global climate system;
- Antarctic climate evolution;
- Evolution and biodiversity in the Antarctic; and
- Astronomy and astrophysics from Antarctica.

Applicants must be PhD students or have completed a PhD no earlier than
five years prior to the deadline for applications. The work must be
carried out in a research group of a SCAR nation different from that of
the applicant's origin and current position.

Additionally, COMNAP announces opportunity for two fellowships. These
fellowships are designed to develop and promote best practice in
managing support for scientific research in Antarctica, and will allow
researchers from a COMNAP member country to undertake short-term visits
to major international laboratories, field facilities, and institutions
operated by other COMNAP members.

Proposed research programs should contribute to the objectives of the
host institution. Research topics may include engineering, social
sciences, humanities, education, communication and outreach, and
medicine.

Application deadline for both fellowship programs: 15 May 2011.
