CH2M HILL Polar Services (CPS) will be holding three Arctic Field Risk
Awareness Training courses in various locations. The schedule is as
follows:
12-13 March in Boulder/Westminster, Colorado
26-27 March in Hanover, New Hampshire
30 April - 1 May in Fairbanks, Alaska
The course is free of charge to the NSF-funded arctic research
community. It is a two-day course (no overnight component) and the
classes will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some of the topics
to be covered include:
- First aid focused on threats to life, cold injuries, and patient
field care;
- Survival bag training;
- Water treatment;
- Bears;
- Emergency communications devices, PLB's, radios, and satellite;
- Cold weather clothing and camping considerations;
- Weather;
- Working around aircraft;
- Search and rescue procedures overview; and
- Risk analysis, decision-making, team building, and communication.
CPS will provide lunch for all attendees for both days. CPS will not be
providing travel arrangements or funds to attend this course, so
participants must make their own arrangements. Additional information
about the course logistics will be provided when the participant list
and venue are confirmed.
Allen O'Bannon will be the lead instructor. O'Bannon is a seasoned
mountaineer and guide, and has more than 20 years of experience teaching
field courses for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). He also
has extensive polar experience in the Arctic and Antarctic and he is the
author of several outdoor adventure books.

and a list of prospective participants' names and email addresses. CPS
must have a sense of how many people are interested before booking a
venue, so please send notice as soon as possible. A wait-list will be
started if needed.
CPS is trying the new scheduling approach this year in an attempt to
provide Field Risk Awareness Training to more NSF arctic field
researchers and field staff. Holding courses at strategic locations
should make the trainings more convenient and easier to attend. If there
is interest and positive feedback, CPS will expand the program in the
future.
