British Antarctic Survey seeks PhD Student

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) seeks applicants for a fully funded
PhD student in ocean modeling. The position duration is three and one
half years and will be based in Cambridge, England.

The successful candidate will study oceanographic processes beneath the
Larsen Ice Shelf. Study will involve development of the Imperial College
Ocean Model and application of that model to the problem of oceanic
freezing in basal crevasses, culminating in a full model of the Larsen
Ice Shelf ocean cavity. The modeling will be tested against
oceanographic data obtained by BAS colleagues during a hot-water
drilling campaign in early 2012.

Minimum academic requirements include an upper second-class
undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics, or other numerate subject
areas; and a strong interest in applying those skills to modeling
climate systems. Informal enquiries to discuss the position are welcome.
The PhD degree will be awarded from Imperial College London. Candidates
must satisfy UK residency conditions to be eligible for the full award.
The position is expected to start 3 October 2011.

ISMER seeks Postdoctoral Candidate
Wave Modeling
Quebec, Canada

The Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER) seeks candidates
for a two-year postdoctoral position in wave modeling for the St.
Lawrence estuary and gulf. The postdoctoral fellow must be able to work
in French, which is the project language.

The successful candidate will work on various aspects of a project to
improve wave modeling and will offer guidance to two masters' students.
The project is related to management of erosion risk in the coastal zone
and will consider the seasonal effect of sea ice on wave occurrence to
improve current wave modeling. Improved modeling will be used to predict
future wave conditions for different climate scenarios.

Geophysical Institute seeks Two PhD Students

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks
applicants for two PhD student positions in glaciology. The positions
are based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidates will develop a regional-scale assessment of
the mass balance of all Alaska/Yukon glaciers and their contribution to
sea level rise. The project will assess surface mass balances using
regional-scale modeling and dynamic mass changes using velocity fields
from repeat SAR remote sensing. Comparison to airborne laser-altimetry
and satellite gravimetry results will be used for model validation and
calibration. One of the positions will focus investigation on surface
mass balance, and the other position will address the dynamic component
of mass loss (iceberg calving).

Applicants must have achieved a degree in geosciences, physics,
mathematics, engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree with
experience in remote sensing, GIS, glaciology, programming, and/or
modeling is desirable. Good oral and written communication skills are
prerequisite.

Employment will start by the earliest possible date, but no later than
fall semester September 2011. Applicant screening will start as soon as
