The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) seeks a Director of Biological
Sciences, with a tenure track appointment as a Professor of Biology. The
position is a nine-month base academic appointment with an additional
one to three months contingent upon funding, based in Anchorage, Alaska.
This is a majority administrative position, with the workload balance
allocated to teaching and/or research in a distribution suitable for the
candidate. The successful applicant will possess a record of excellence
in directing an active and nationally-recognized research program, as
well as a demonstrated commitment to academic leadership, high-quality
teaching, mentorship of graduate students, and the ability to work
across academic units. Candidates are expected to develop a strategic
vision for the department's future that is compatible with existing and
emerging strengths and opportunities, as well as UAA's overall mission
to discover and disseminate knowledge through teaching, research, and
engagement. Candidates should be eligible for appointment as a full
professor.
The research of many departmental faculty members is directed at
questions related to life in the north. The Department of Biological
Sciences plays a critical role in the education of health and life
science majors from across the campus, and provides BA, BS, and honors
program options for over 500 majors. A productive graduate program

Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in biology or relevant
scientific field and a commitment to conceptually applied research as
demonstrated in dissertation and a strong publication record.
Administrative experience at the university department level or above is
required, as are strong interpersonal and communication skills,
experience working with private and public external constituencies, an
ability to advocate for the department, and ability to acquire funding
from external sources.

Associate Program Officer and Postdoctoral Fellow

The Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, a sister unit to the
Polar Research Board at the National Academy of Sciences/National
Research Council, has two positions open, to be filled early in 2011.
Both positions will be based in Washington, D.C.
The first opening is for an Associate Program Officer. Among other
duties, the successful candidate will develop and manage programs and
project activities, coordinate and administer all aspects of the
Academy's study committee process, and provide support to the committee
in all aspects of its work. Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in
a related field, or equivalent knowledge with three years of related
professional experience. An advanced degree in a related field is
desired, as is demonstrated proficiency in conveying scientific,
technical, and/or policy information in oral and written form. A more

The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at the University of
Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a tenure-track,
full-time Assistant Professor in Oceanography. The position will be
based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate core
and/or specialty oceanography courses in addition to actively mentoring
and supporting graduate students as part of the SFOS Graduate Program in
Marine Science and Limnology. Applicants should be interested in
interdisciplinary research focused on high latitude marine ecosystems.
The area of expertise is open within the marine biological, chemical,
and geological disciplines, and may include, for example: bioacoustics,
biogeochemistry, fisheries oceanography, marine microbial/molecular
ecology, or nutrient dynamics.
Qualified applicants must possess a PhD in oceanography (or a related
field) from an accredited university by the time of hire. Postdoctoral
experience is preferred. The applicant must be proficient in English,
have university-level teaching ability, and have a strong research and
publication record appropriate to their experience and date of degree.

- British Antarctic Survey seeks Postdoctoral Researcher

The British Antarctic Survey seeks to appoint a postdoctoral (or
experienced postgraduate) researcher in the field of geophysics. The
position will be based in Cambridge, United Kingdom with fieldwork in
Antarctica.
The successful applicant will join a team studying the processes that
control glacial flow, with particular emphasis on conditions at the bed
of ice streams and valley glaciers. Ice-penetrating radar systems are
used to produce detailed maps of sub-glacial bedforms and basal water
distribution, together with seismic reflection surveys to derive the
physical properties of sub-glacial sediments. The initial work will be
on Pine Island Glacier, which is one of the fastest flowing outlet
glaciers of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, and is currently thinning and
accelerating, making a direct contribution to global sea level rise.
Position duties will include:
- Assisting to plan and undertake fieldwork, initially in
Antarctica, using radar, seismic, and GPS equipment;
- Process and interpreting the data;
- Publishing the results in scientific papers and at conferences;
- Analyzing existing datasets; and
- Developing research proposals for future work in both polar
regions.
Applicants must have a degree in physical sciences and a PhD or
equivalent postgraduate experience. The ability to work in Antarctic
conditions is required.
