On behalf of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and
Enforcement, (BOEMRE, formerly the Minerals Management Service),
organizers invite attendance at a workshop for a recently awarded
project, entitled "Evaluation of the Use of Hindcast Model Data for Oil
Spill Risk Analysis (OSRA) in a Period of Rapidly Changing Conditions."
The three-day workshop is planned for 29-31 March 2011 at the Science
Applications International Corporation (SAIC) Conference Center in
McLean, Virginia (just outside of Washington, DC).

The purpose of the project is to review the current status of
oceanographic knowledge in the Arctic and consider the effects that
climate change may be having on circulation patterns in the region,
particularly in the Beaufort, Bering, and Chukchi Seas. The overall goal
of the project is to assess meteorological forcing, ice motion, and
surface ocean current results from hindcast models and to recommend
scientific methodology to account for recent rapidly changing conditions
in the Arctic for the purposes of Oil Spill Risk Analysis (OSRA). SAIC
is the prime contractor for this project, and Heather Crowley is the
BOEMRE Project Manager.

The workshop objectives are as follows:

- Review the current status of oceanographic knowledge in the
Arctic, including existing research in Arctic Ocean modeling and the
quality of available forcing data.
- Describe the effects of climate change on sea ice, circulation,
river discharge, etc., in the Arctic Ocean and the impacts of these
changes on surface circulation.
- Describe the attributes of hindcast data currently used for OSRA
and the skill assessment against observations used to evaluate
surface currents in the region.
- Evaluate alternate approaches such as the incorporation of
forecast modeling results in the OSRA process.
- Develop scientific recommendations that BOEMRE will use as
guidance to prepare studies in its planning process.

Organizers of the 11th Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography
announce a call for papers. The conference is sponsored by the American
Meteorological Society (AMS) and organized by the AMS Polar Meteorology
and Oceanography Committee, and will be held 2-4 May 2011 at the Omni
Parker House in Boston, Massachusetts.

Papers are solicited on all aspects of polar meteorology and
oceanography, including atmospheric, oceanic, terrestrial, and
cryospheric processes, climate (past, present, and future), rapid
environmental change, interactions among polar atmosphere-ocean-land-ice
components, high latitude atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, boundary
layer processes, weather forecasting, human dimensions, and extreme
events.

Please submit your abstract electronically via the AMS conference
website by Monday, 10 January 2011 (see the website for instructions).
An abstract fee of $95, payable by credit card or purchase order, is
charged at the time of submission (refundable only if abstract is not
accepted).

Authors of accepted presentations will be notified via email by early
February 2011. Instructions for formatting extended abstracts will be
posted on the AMS conference website. Extended manuscripts (file size up
to 3 MB) must be submitted electronically by 15 April 2011. All
abstracts, extended abstracts, and presentations will be made available
on the AMS website.

    Kodiak Area Marine Science Symposium
    9-12 April 2011

Researchers who have conducted marine and coastal studies around Kodiak,
Alaska, are invited to submit presentation abstracts to the Kodiak Area
Marine Science Symposium (KAMSS). The meeting is scheduled for 9-12
April 2011 in Kodiak, Alaska.

Researchers will have the opportunity to discuss their work on Kodiak's
marine environment and resources. KAMSS talks will span all dimensions
of marine science in the Kodiak area, from physical oceanography to
zooplankton, crabs to salmon, puffins to killer whales, and historic to
current human dimensions.

Presenters are asked to present their current/new research findings,
provide updates on the status of marine resources, highlight decadal
changes, identify integrated studies, and discuss industry/public
collaborations. Abstracts must be submitted online. For the complete
