- Stockholm University seeks PhD Candidates
Meteorology
Stockholm, Sweden
The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University seeks PhD
candidates for a project aimed at providing a better understanding of
relationships between arctic climate change, changes in sea-ice, and
atmospheric circulation. The position will be based in Stockholm,
Sweden.
The arctic sea-ice extent in summer has declined in recent years.
Several processes may be involved in inducing this sea-ice anomaly,
including an increase of the greenhouse effect associated with more CO2,
water vapour, and clouds in the atmosphere, which increases longwave
radiation towards the surface; an increase of shortwave-radiation
absorption by the surface due to ice retreat, increase of melt ponds,
and cloud changes; and changes of the atmospheric and oceanic
circulations which could bring more heat to sea-ice areas. Circulation
changes can also increase ice export from the Arctic.
The project will focus on the atmospheric components, while keeping in
mind all processes that could potentially contribute to the ice melt.
Radiation and turbulent fluxes over the Arctic Ocean along with
convergence of atmospheric energy transport in the Arctic will be
analyzed. Reanalysis data sets as well as satellite observations are
examples of data sources that can be used. Analysis of in situ data can
become considered in the context of evaluating the large-scale data
sets. Modeling studies may also apply.
Applicants must meet the admissions requirements for PhD studies in the
Department of Meterology at Stockholm University. This particular
project requires exceptional analytical skill, and analysis of advanced
observation data is a special merit. Candidates with a strong background
in dynamical meteorology and an interest in atmospheric large-scale
circulation and arctic climate will be given preference.
Application deadline: Saturday, 20 November 2010.
The position is full time for a maximum of four study years. Additional
information, including details on eligibility and the application and
selection processes, is available online at:

track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of
Environmental/Analytical Chemistry. The position will be based in
Fairbanks, Alaska.
Teaching duties will include undergraduate courses in general and
analytical chemistry, and advanced/graduate courses in the candidate's
field of expertise. The candidate is expected to establish an externally
funded research program in an area related to environmental chemistry,
and will mentor graduate and undergraduate student research.

- Environment Canada seeks Postdoctoral Researchers
Ice-Ocean Data Assimilation
Montreal, Canada
The Meteorological Research Division and Marine and Ice Services
Division of Environment Canada, located in Montreal and Ottawa, Canada,
are seeking postdoctoral researchers to develop and evaluate techniques
to assimilate both sea-ice and oceanographic observations for ice-ocean
analyses and initialization of coupled ice-ocean models of the Arctic.
The fellows will apply this research within the context of an existing
Environment Canada sea ice data assimilation system and the ocean data
assimilation system developed by Mercator Ocean. The numerical model is
based on NEMO (Nucleus for European Modeling of the Ocean), which is
currently being used in numerous applications across Canada. The work
will be performed as part of a dynamic research team and contribute to
improving both operational sea ice and ocean products, and numerical
weather forecasts of the Meteorological Service of Canada. The
fellowship is a Visiting Fellowship in Canadian Government Laboratories
administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of
Canada (NSERC).
Candidates must have a PhD in oceanography, meteorology, or a related
field. Experience in geophysical data assimilation, preferably in the
context of initializing sea ice and/or ocean models, and experience with
Fortran programming in a UNIX environment is required.
The position is available for a maximum of three years pending annual
review and availability of funds. Applications are currently being
accepted and the position will remain open until filled. Candidates
should send their curriculum vitae to:
