The Arctic Visiting Speakers Series (AVS), managed by the Arctic
Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS) with funding from the National
Science Foundation Division of Arctic Sciences, funds researchers and
other arctic experts to travel and share their knowledge in communities
where they might not otherwise connect. Speakers cover a wide range of
arctic research topics and can address a variety of audiences including
K-12 students, graduate and undergraduate students, and the public.
The AVS program is proud to announce two separate tours taking place in
November:
The Prince William Sound Science Center in Cordova, Alaska will be
hosting Dr. Robert McGhee, a curator of arctic archaeology from Ottawa,
Canada. His programs will trace the perception of the Arctic as seen
through the written history of western civilization, and compare
traditional views of the native Inuit with those revealed by the study
of archaeology. Dr. McGhee will be addressing the students of Cordova
Middle School and High School as well as the Native Elders and the
Native Corporation staff during a potluck luncheon. Dr. McGhee will also
speak to the community of Cordova in the U.S. Forest Service conference
room on Tuesday, 2 November at 7:00 p.m. This lecture will be televised
live to viewers in Valdez, Alaska. For more information on the Cordova
tour, please see: http://www.arcus.org/arctic_speaker/current_tours.html.
The Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA) in Everett, Washington will be
hosting Charles Wohlforth, author of "The Whale and the Supercomputer"
and "The Fate of Nature." His talks will concentrate on ocean and arctic
environmental problems; especially climate change, sea ice loss, and
ocean acidification, and how changes in social norms that govern our
relationship to nature are key to addressing these issues. Mr. Wohlforth
will speak to the students and faculty of ORCA as well as the students
of Everett Community College. For more information on the Everett tour,
please see: http://www.arcus.org/arctic_speaker/current_tours.html.
