The 13th Arctic Ungulate Conference (AUC) will be held 22-26 August 2011
in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. The theme of the
conference is "Challenges of Managing Northern Ungulates."

The theme addresses the difficulties of managing ungulate populations
that are faced with the unpredictable effects of climate change and an
ever-increasing human presence on the land. The conference will also
focus on the challenges associated with developing recovery actions for
declining caribou and reindeer populations that are an integral part of
Aboriginal cultures and ways of life.

The conference will provide an opportunity for biologists, managers,
Aboriginal groups, co-management boards, researchers, students, and
resource users to discuss northern ungulate research and management with
their circumpolar peers. A number of topics and sessions are under

  1. REMINDER: Call for Session Proposals
    7th Congress of the International Arctic Social Sciences
    22-26 June 2011

Session proposals for the Seventh Congress of the International Arctic
Social Sciences (ICASS VII) must be submitted by Wednesday, 15 September
2010. The meeting will be convened in Akureyri, Iceland, on 22-26 June
2011. The working title for ICASS VII is 'Circumpolar Perspectives in
Global Dialogue: Social Sciences Beyond the IPY.'

The International Congress of the Arctic Social Sciences is held every
three years. For more information about previous ICASS meetings please
visit: http://www.iassa.org. ICASS VII will offer various venues to
share arctic social science research and to analyze the outcome of IPY
in social, human, and related fields. This includes special project
sessions, discussion panels, plenary presentations, and invited talks.

Concrete proposals or ideas and thoughts about themes of special
interest for sessions and workshops at ICASS VII are invited. Session
proposals must be submitted by Wednesday, 15 September 2010 to
International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA) secretary Lara
Olafsdottir (larao [at] svs.is) and IASSA president Joan Nymand Larsen
(jnl [at] svs.is).

    Understanding Circumpolar Ecosystems in a Changing World:
    Beyond Outcomes of the International Polar Year

The due date for abstract submissions for "Understanding Circumpolar
Ecosystems in a Changing World--Beyond outcomes of IPY" has been
extended to Friday, 24 September 2010. The conference/workshop will be
held 3-6 November 2010 at the University of Alberta Conference Centre,
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The conference is open to anyone, and not limited to outcomes of
activities conducted during the International Polar Year 2007-8. It will
provide an international forum for the discussion of our understanding
of the current and future structure, diversity and functioning of the
circumpolar region - how climate and disturbance interact in the
circumpolar North, with an emphasis on terrestrial environments. Topics
will include the warming and disappearing permafrost, treeline dynamics,
northern peatlands/wetlands, freshwater lake ecosystems, carbon budgets,
natural and anthropogenic disturbances, changes in vertebrate
populations, and many others. Results of IPY 2007-8 will be placed in
the context of ecological, economic and cultural sustainability of the
circumpolar region under a changing climate. The conference is not
restricted to IPY-funded research.

The conference will incorporate the 5th Annual PPS Arctic Meeting
(http://ppsarctic.nina.no/content/2010_annualmeeting.html) and working
meetings for other IPY projects.
