The third Arctic Observing Network (AON) Principal Investigators (PI)
meeting was held 30 November-2 December 2009 in Boulder, Colorado to
review observing system status and accomplishments at the close of the
International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2009 and to develop recommendations
for refining, enhancing, and sustaining the network in the years to
come.
Sponsored primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), with
additional support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) and several other agencies, meeting participants
included AON investigators, agency representatives, international
partners, and outside experts familiar with observing system
implementation.
The report consists of eight sections:
I. Executive Summary - summarizes accomplishments, recommendations on
next steps, agency coordination, and international collaboration and
coordination
II. Introduction and Overview - provides a short description of the AON
program
III. AON Accomplishments - reviews the status of AON progress in
atmosphere, ocean and sea ice, hydrology and cryosphere, terrestrial
ecosystems, and human dimensions
IV. AON Investigator Perspectives on Network Design, Gaps, and Urgent
Needs - identifies challenges and needs in implementing AON
V. Agency Summaries - summarizes agency arctic observing activities and
priorities
VI. International Collaboration and Coordination - provides
recommendations for fostering international coordination
VII. Data Dissemination, Use, and Archiving - discussion of management
of multi-disciplinary data
VIII: Summary and Outlook - identifies four near-term issues to be
addressed in building a coordinated arctic observing system
Appendices include AON project reports and the meeting agenda and
participant list.
