  1. Abstract Deadline Extended
    2010 Arctic Science Conference
Water: Integrating Health, Habitat, and Economy
    13-15 September 2010
    Anchorage, Alaska

The abstract submission deadline for the 2010 Arctic Science Conference
has been extended to Monday, 16 August 2010. The meeting, entitled
"Water: Integrating Health, Habitat, and Economy," will be held
Monday-Wednesday, 13-15 September 2010 in Anchorage, Alaska.

Increasingly rapid global change now presents Alaska with emerging
challenges. Many of these lie at the interface of water and society as
an ever-crowded world grapples with balancing quality, supply, and
demand. Water is life and our approaches to its management, conservation
and utilization will determine the survival and well-being of billions
of people, both today and for the foreseeable future. How do we develop
the North such that it is resilient and responsive? The conference will
seek a better understanding of the issues that surround water ranging
from food security to its role in health and sustaining the economy.

To register for the conference, please go to:
https://www.SignUp4.net/public/ap.aspx?EID=ARCT12E&OID=130.

Abstract submissions will be accepted through 12:00 p.m. (Alaska time
zone) Monday, 16 August 2010. Abstracts must be submitted online at:
http://arcticaaas.org/meetings/2010/abstract.html.

    MicroPerm Workshop
    8-10 November 2010
    Potsdam, Germany

Organizers announce that the MicroPerm Workshop, an international
workshop to initiate the circumpolar integration of permafrost
microbiological studies, will be convened Monday to Wednesday, 8-10
November 2010 at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine
Research in Potsdam, Germany.

MicroPerm aims at establishing a research network bringing together
early career scientists with expert researchers in the field of
permafrost microbiology. The workshop is meant to provide a forum for
all scientists interested in permafrost microbiology and to work towards
a project integrating results and methods relevant to that topic. Travel
grants will be available for early career scientists.

The workshop is open to everyone interested in attending, and all
attendees are invited to present a poster. Poster sessions will be
embedded by plenary keynote lectures. Deadline for registration and
abstract submission is Friday, 10 September 2010. Registration must be
completed online, by submitting the web form available at:
http://www.microperm.org.

MicroPerm has funds available for young scientists to support travel
expenses to attend the workshop. For more funding information, please
