Organizers of the Seventh Congress of the International Arctic Social
Sciences (ICASS VII) announce a call for session proposals. The meeting
will be convened in Akureyri, Iceland, on 22-26 June 2011. The working
title for ICASS VII is 'Circumpolar Perspectives in Global Dialogue:
Social Sciences Beyond the IPY.'

The International Congress of the Arctic Social Sciences is held every
three years. For more information about previous ICASS meetings please
visit: http://www.iassa.org. ICASS VII will offer various venues to
share arctic social science research and to analyze the outcome of IPY
in social, human, and related fields. This includes special project
sessions, discussion panels, plenary presentations, and invited talks.

Concrete proposals or ideas and thoughts about themes of special
interest for sessions and workshops at ICASS VII are invited. Session
proposals must be submitted by Wednesday, 15 September 2010 to
International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA) secretary Lara
Olafsdottir (larao [at] svs.is) and IASSA president Joan Nymand Larsen
(jnl [at] svs.is).

A list of proposed ICASS VII sessions will be announced in October 2010.

updates on as they become available.

    Arctic Science Summit Week 2011
    28 March - 1 April 2011

Organizers announce that the 12th Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW 2011)
will be held in Seoul, Korea, from 28 March - 1 April 2011.

ASSW 2011 will include not only business meetings but also a three-day
science symposium. The symposium will take place 29-31 March and the
business meetings will be held on 28 March and 1 April.

The purpose of ASSW 2011 is to provide opportunities for international
coordination, collaboration, and cooperation in all fields of arctic
science and to combine science and management meetings. The main theme
of the symposium is 'The Arctic: New Frontier For Global Sciences.' It
will consist of five disciplinary sessions and three interdisciplinary
sessions.

    10th International Conference on Permafrost

The International Permafrost Association and the Tyumen Oil and Gas
University announce the Tenth International Conference on Permafrost.
The conference is to be held in 25-29 June 2012 in Tyumen, Russia.

The conference will focus on arctic, Antarctic, and alpine permafrost
research. The theme of the conference is 'Resources and Risks in
permafrost regions in a changing world' and refers to both the impacts
of a changing world on permafrost and the impact of permafrost on a
changing world. It also uses the word 'resource,' which, in the host
university tradition, relates to permafrost as both an industrial and
environmental resource. The conference will also host official IPA
Executive Committee and Council meetings. Stipends will be available for
young scientists.

The International Conference on Permafrost, held every four years, is
the premier venue for all research related to permafrost. Information on
registration, abstracts, themes proposed for the sessions, and the

    Zooplankton in Polar Ecosystems and Extreme Environments
    5th Zooplankton Production Symposium

Organizers announce a special session entitled 'Zooplankton in Polar
Ecosystems and Extreme Environments.' The session will be convened at
the 5th Zooplankton Production Symposium, scheduled for 14-18 March 2011
in Pucon, Chile.

Polar waters and their marginal seas are characterized by low, fairly
stable temperatures, intense variation in solar radiation amplified by
winter ice cover, and high seasonal variation in pelagic primary
production. Further, the fastest warming regions on the planet are at
high latitudes. These habitats are undergoing dramatic environmental
changes such as summer sea ice retreat in the Western Arctic, and are
predicted to show the first signs of carbonate under-saturation. The
extreme polar conditions require adaptations by zooplankton, including
stenothermy, shrinkage, use of sea ice, differing phenologies, seasonal
migrations and diet shifts plus pulsed reproduction and slow, strongly
seasonal growth. Some of these attributes make polar zooplankton
potentially sensitive even to small changes in temperature, sea ice
extent, seasonality, and the timing of food. Polar ecosystems also can
provide glimpses into the future of climate change. They provide a
natural test-bed to examine both the sensitivity (e.g., physiological
limits) and the resilience (e.g., behavioral flexibility) of
zooplankton.

The session welcomes studies from high latitudes of both hemispheres,
examining the response of zooplankton to spatial and temporal
environmental variability and change. Organizers encourage broader scale
comparative contributions (of species, regions, or hemispheres),
especially those that explore the mechanisms of sensitivity or
resilience.
