The findings from two Bering Strait Observations workshops are being
compiled into a workshop report, and comments, editing, and additional
text contributions are now welcome. Comments will be accepted through
Friday, 20 August 2010. The full report can be downloaded at:
http://arctic.cbl.umces.edu/#_DBO.
Comments and reviews are welcome as contributions to the development of
a final workshop report that will make recommendations for a
scientifically appropriate level of environmental observation
infrastructure in the Bering Strait. The goal of the environmental
observation development will be to serve both local community and
scientific needs in the Bering Strait region as well as across the
Arctic. The Bering Strait is widely understood to play a key role in
supporting biological productivity in the Arctic, as well as playing a
critical role in influencing heat and freshwater fluxes to the Arctic
Ocean. Observational data collected in this region are expected to be
applicable to understanding environmental changes throughout the Arctic.
The draft workshop report is the result of two workshops supported by
the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Alaska Ocean Observing System
(AOOS), which were held in May 2009 and January 2010 and engaged
scientists and local stakeholders in the Bering Strait region. Workshop
participants identified the most important categories of biological,
chemical, and physical observations that potentially could be made in
the Bering Strait. The international mix of science participants also
made judgments concerning the practicality of those measurements and the
best platforms for each observation type (e.g. moorings, ship-based
measurements, community-based observations).
Critiques and reviews of the draft workshop report that bring in
international perspectives and document measurements in the Bering
Strait that will serve pan-arctic observation needs are particularly
welcome.
