A short course entitled "Engineering for Arctic Environments" is being
offered 20-23 April 2010 in Houston, Texas through Clarion Technical
Conferences. The objective of this course is to introduce arctic
engineering, primarily in the context of the production and
transportation of oil and gas, but also considering broader
infrastructure.
The arctic regions have enormous resources of oil, gas, minerals, and
fish. They are politically, strategically, and economically important to
the circumpolar countries and to the world as a whole. They are also
environmentally and socially sensitive, and any development requires a
careful balance between the interests of outside investors, the local
communities, the indigenous peoples, the regulatory environment, and the
natural environment.
Engineers engaged with current or future projects in the arctic regions
and concerned with broad planning, conceptual design, and detailed
engineering are encouraged to attend the course. "Engineering for
Arctic Environments" will also be relevant to people who need to
understand what engineers are planning, including public officials,
regulators, specialists in the environment, lawyers, and potential
investors. Course participants will be eligible to receive 2.5
continuing education units.
