  1. CO10 - Observations and Modelling of Air-Sea Biogeochemical
    Fluxes in Ice-Covered Waters

Organizers of Session CO10, "Observations and Modelling of Air-Sea
Biogeochemical Fluxes in Ice-Covered Waters," announce a call for
abstracts. The session will be convened at the American Geophysical
Union (AGU) Ocean Sciences Meeting, 22-26 February 2010, in Portland,
Oregon.

Field observations and laboratory studies over the last 10 years have
discredited the assumption that sea ice acts as a passive barrier to
air-sea biogeochemical exchange. It is now known that natural sea ice is
not only permeable to gases and fluids under common in situ conditions,
but many substances, including carbon dioxide, dimethyl sulfide, and
iron, are involved in complex biogeochemical processes within the ice,
thereby regulating exchanges with both the atmosphere and the underlying
water. However, very little is still known about the small-scale
mechanisms controlling the fluxes at the interfaces and within the ice
or about the large-scale effects on global biogeochemical cycles and
climate.

To help answer these small- and large-scale questions, organizers
welcome abstracts for presentations on both observational and modeling
studies of biogeochemically-active materials at the air-sea interface of
polar waters, including ice, leads, cracks, and polynyas.

The abstract submission deadline for this and all other sessions is
Thursday, 15 October 2009, at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time. To submit
an abstract, you must enter the first author's current AGU member ID and

  1. BO12 - Spatial Dynamics of Species Abundance and Interactions
    Across Trophic Levels

Organizers of Session BO12, "Spatial Dynamics of Species Abundance and
Interactions Across Trophic Levels," announce a call for abstracts. The
session will be convened at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Ocean
Sciences Meeting, 22-26 February 2010, in Portland, Oregon.

The ocean is not spatially homogeneous. Species-environment interactions
are complex; they vary over different observational scales and can be
nonlinear and nonadditive. There is a need for implementing statistical
techniques to account for these complexities in spatial data. Species
spatial dynamics, besides having broad ecological significance also bear
direct applied relevance, given the current emphasis on protecting
marine organisms along with their habitats. The availability of spatial
data in marine ecology may well exceed that of other ecological
disciplines, opening up a tremendous potential for new stimulating
studies on spatial ecology and resource management.

Session organizers solicit presentations on the statistical analysis of
pelagic and benthic species distribution and interactions across trophic
levels. They particularly seek studies that use spatio-temporal
observations to predict species dynamics in relation to climatic and
human impacts.
