  1. IT24 - Sea Ice Extremes, Upper Ocean Warming, and Ecosystem Response
in the Pacific Arctic in Relation to the Pan-Arctic System

Organizers of Special Session IT24, "Sea Ice Extremes, Upper Ocean
Warming, and Ecosystem Response in the Pacific Arctic in Relation to the
Pan-Arctic System," announce a call for abstracts. The session will be
convened at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Ocean Sciences Meeting,
22-26 February 2010, in Portland, Oregon.

The Pacific sector of the Arctic has experienced extreme changes in sea
ice cover and duration, with potential long-range impacts to the marine
ecosystem. This session will focus on ecosystem status and change in the
Pacific Arctic sector, including how Pacific water transiting into the
Arctic is modified over the wide continental shelves, transported to the
deep Arctic basin and its connectivity to the North Atlantic. This
session is international and interdisciplinary in scope, with a goal to
present an array of physical, biogeochemical, and biological data from
past and current research projects, especially those undertaken during
the International Polar Year (IPY).

Session organizers invite all disciplines of arctic scientists
interested in the Pacific Arctic marine system to submit abstracts.
Because modeling is key to understanding and forecasting the arctic
system, regional and global models that evaluate past and ongoing
physical and biogeochemical changes in the Pacific Arctic region and
that project various scenarios associated with climate warming are
encouraged.

The abstract submission deadline for this and all other sessions is
Thursday, 15 October 2009, at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time. To submit
an abstract, you must enter the first author's current AGU member ID and
password at: http://agu-os10.abstractcentral.com/.

  1. IT28 - Interconnectivity of Arctic and Subarctic Processes: A
Panarctic perspective of Ecosystem Dynamics and Physical Forcing

Organizers of Special Session IT28, "Interconnectivity of Arctic and
Subarctic Processes: A Panarctic perspective of Ecosystem Dynamics and
Physical Forcing," announce a call for abstracts. The session will be
convened at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Ocean Sciences Meeting,
22-26 February 2010, in Portland, Oregon.

The Arctic Ocean connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and as such
plays a crucial role in global oceanic circulation and climate. Rapid
change in the Arctic, as evidenced by the summer 2007 and 2008 dramatic
retreat of the arctic ice pack, is associated with changes in
circulation and ventilation of the arctic and subarctic seas. These
changes are expected to impact marine ecosystem structure and function,
food web dynamics, and the interconnectivity between arctic and
subarctic biomes and their boundaries.

This session is aimed at understanding the connections between
contemporary panarctic and subarctic processes, and so includes both the
western and eastern arctic domains. Organizers invite abstracts from all
oceanographic disciplines that contribute to the understanding of the
biological systems, biogeochemistry, and physics of these regions and
the linkages among them.

The abstract submission deadline for this and all other sessions is
Thursday, 15 October 2009, at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time. To submit
an abstract, you must enter the first author's current AGU member ID and
password at: http://agu-os10.abstractcentral.com/.

  1. IT61 - Towards Comprehensive Observing Systems in Polar Regions 2:
    Southern Ocean

Organizers of Session IT61, "Towards Comprehensive Observing Systems in
Polar Regions 2: Southern Ocean," announce a call for abstracts. The
session will be convened at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Ocean
Sciences Meeting, 22-26 February 2010, in Portland, Oregon.

The Southern Ocean plays a critical role in the global ocean
circulation, biogeochemical cycles, and climate. Feedbacks involving
ocean circulation, sea ice, ice shelves, and the carbon cycle have the
potential to significantly affect the extent and rate of future climate
change and sea-level rise, but remain poorly understood. Limited
observations suggest the Southern Ocean is changing: the region is
warming more rapidly than the global ocean average; the uptake of carbon
by the Southern Ocean has slowed the rate of climate change but
increased the acidity of the Southern Ocean, while the ability of the
region to continue to absorb CO2 is a topic of active debate; and there
are indications of ecosystem changes. Yet our understanding of these
regions is hampered by a lack of sustained observations. Advances in
technology and understanding mean that it is now feasible to plan and
implement a Southern Ocean Observing System.

This session aims to bring together all those involved with the
planning, design, implementation, and use of observations in the
Southern Ocean as well as those involved in the technological
developments that make these observations possible. Science
contributions that make use of such sustained observations are
particularly encouraged.
