The Organizing Committee is pleased to announce an upcoming
international workshop, titled "Synthesizing International Understanding
of Changes in the Arctic Hydrological System." The workshop will be held
30 September to 4 October 2009 in Stockholm, Sweden, at the Beijer
Institute of the Royal Swedish Academy. The workshop is sponsored by the
National Science Foundation Arctic System Science (NSF-ARCSS)
Arctic-CHAMP (City College of New York / University of New Hampshire)
Science Management Office, the International Study of Arctic Change
(ISAC), and the International Arctic Research Center (IARC; University
of Alaska Fairbanks).

The overarching goals of the meeting are to stage a post-International
Polar Year (IPY) lessons-learned workshop with co-equal numbers of
NSF-ARCSS Freshwater Integration study (FWI), IPY, and Second
International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP-II)
researchers, using insights from recent scientific findings, data, and
strategies to afford synthesis. The workshop aims to:
- Take stock of recent advances in our understanding of changes in
the arctic hydrological system;
- Identify key remaining research gaps and unanswered questions; and
- Gather insight on where to focus future research efforts and
initiatives (nationally and internationally).

The workshop will bring together approximately 40 participants, with
about equal numbers from North America and Europe/Scandinavia, and will
include representatives from Canada, Russia, Germany, Iceland, Sweden,
Norway, Finland, Denmark/Greenland, and the U.S. A draft agenda is
available upon request. The Workshop Organizing Committee will hold a
2-day writers' workshop on 3-4 October with plans to publish a workshop
report after the meeting and will also explore the possibility of
publishing a special journal issue based on material presented in the
invited keynote lectures.

Participants will be accepted on the basis of their interest in the
subject matter of the workshop as explained in their application letter.
Geographic balance will also be considered. A limited number of partial
travel support awards are available. Those interested in attending the
workshop should send an email with a brief (1-2 paragraphs, maximum)
statement of interest in the workshop by Wednesday, 26 August to:
