The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Sport Division (ADF&G-SFD),
invites applications for a Fishery Biologist III position with the
Kachemak Bay Research Reserve (KBRR), in Homer, Alaska.
The Fishery Biologist III will lead a multi-disciplinary research team
of four scientists at the KBRR and will focus their efforts on the
continued development of an established research program that seeks to
foster a comprehensive understanding of the ecological, estuarine, and
marine environments within, and adjacent, to the Kachemak Bay Research
Reserve. As the leader of the research team this position requires
proven leadership and supervisory experience, and strong verbal and
written communication skills.
The Fisheries Biologist III is responsible for the coordination and
implementation of KBRR research initiatives while working cooperatively
within the National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) system, and
ADF&G-SFD. In this role, the incumbent is responsible for the on-going
oceanographic and meteorological monitoring programs associated with the
NERR System Wide Monitoring Program, the Graduate Research Fellowship
program, overseeing research reserve project data collection, analysis,
writing and editing of technical reports, and supervision of the KBRR
research team. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring the KBRR
strategic plan is implemented and research project goals and objectives
are completed on time and within budget.
This position will provide the incumbent with a unique opportunity to
research, learn, and provide outreach on the ecology, oceanography, and
biology of the Kachemak Bay / Lower Cook Inlet region by developing
research questions that aid in the understanding of the Lower Cook Inlet
and Kachemak Bay area, and author studies that inform natural resource
managers, resource users and the public of those findings.
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Advanced knowledge of an estuarine, marine, or oceanographic research
discipline related to high latitude systems
- Ability to plan, implement and coordinate a comprehensive,
collaborative and multi-disciplinary research and monitoring program
- Ability to analyze large datasets to ensure adherence to established
research and monitoring protocols
- Experience with authoring and reviewing or evaluating staff project
reports in formal (published) or informal (technical reports) formats
- Experience with developing and reviewing and evaluating operational
plans for research projects
- Ability to effectively communicate through strong oral and written
skills to a diverse group of internal and external partners to ensure
programmatic integration
- Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships between
regional and local researchers
- Experience supervising a diverse research team
- Experience with MS software (Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint), GIS
software, and statistical software
- Experience with oceanographic or environmental water quality sensors
or similar scientific instruments
- Experience with developing or writing research proposals to funding
agencies
- Experience with managing a program budget with multiple projects and
funding sources
- Experience conducting field-based research
- Strong program management skills

of Commerce, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) as a unit of the (NERR) System.
