"Arctic Studies during the International Polar Year" is a six-credit
field course offered by Michigan State University from 30 June to 21
July 2008.
The unique program is open to a total of twenty students from a wide
range of disciplines. A few spaces are still available. Students will
travel to Svalbard, an area in the High Arctic where cutting-edge
research is being conducted on key issues including climate change,
toxic chemical sources and impacts on arctic ecology, and petrochemical
exploration and extraction. During the three-week program, students will
experience the arctic environment aboard a Russian icebreaker reaching a
latitude of nearly 81 degrees N, interact directly with polar scientists
working on a variety of issues, and gain "hands-on" knowledge about the
polar regions as they prepare themselves for contributing to
sustainability in a global context.
Participants may register for up to six credits by applying through the
Michigan State University Study Abroad Program
(http://www.studyabroad.msu.edu). A program fee of $6,438 USD covers a
berth on the icebreaker, other lodging, field trips, museum entrance
fees, instructional costs, and most local transportation and meals. It
does not include tuition or airfare. In addition to Svalbard, a portion
of the program will be conducted in Tromso and Oslo, Norway.
The application deadline is Saturday, 1 March 2008. Application
information is available at:
