The departments of Geography and History at Memorial University of
Newfoundland are seeking graduate students at the Masters level to work
on the project, "Mining and Northern Development: Toward a Historical
Political Ecology," which will assess the social and environmental
impacts of northern mining projects on Indigenous people and landscapes.
There are two positions available.
One-year Masters of Arts in History:
In addition to completing required courses for the MA program, the
successful candidate will develop a major paper project involving
primary research on the history of mining in northern Canada. The
student will also assist with the development of case study research
tied to the larger project and the organization of community workshops
on the history of mining.
Two-year Masters of Arts in Geography:
The successful candidate will develop a major research project on the
historical geography of mining in Labrador. The regional focus of the
project is the Schefferville and Labrador City iron mining belt. In
addition to completing required courses for the MA program, the student
will conduct primary and oral history research, and will develop
community workshops on mining in Labrador.
Comprehensive funding packages (subject to final approval) are available
for both of these positions, with opportunities to augment financial
support through scholarships or Graduate Assistantships.
