The Mohn-Sverdrup Center for Global Ocean Studies and Operational
Oceanography (MSC) at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing
Center, University of Bergen is seeking two postdoctoral fellows and one
PhD student. The successful candidates will work in a dynamic team and
participate on collaborative projects with both international and
Norwegian partners. Female applicants are encouraged to apply and will

1) Postdoctoral Fellowship in "Eddy-resolving modeling studies of the
Nordic Seas":
The successful candidate will continue the developments of a
high-resolution Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) model covering the
Nordic Seas. The model system will be used to study the mesoscale eddy
activity in the area in order to achieve a better understanding of the
large-scale circulation and mixing processes. This two-year postdoctoral
position will begin in fall 2007 and is funded by a grant from the
Norwegian Research Council through the project "Ocean Weather and
Ecosystems."
Applicants must hold a PhD in oceanography, have experience in ocean

2) Postdoctoral Fellowship in "Non-Gaussian assimilation methods for a
coupled physical-ecosystem model of the North Atlantic":
The successful candidate will evaluate non-Gaussian variants of the
Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) in a HYCOM model of the North Atlantic
coupled with a biogeochemical model. The two-year postdoctoral position
will begin in August 2008 and is funded by a grant from the Norwegian
Research Council through the project "Forecasting Non-linear systems
with the EnKF and related methods."
Applicants must hold a PhD in oceanography or data assimilation, have
experience in applied mathematics, and submit applications by 1 February

3) PhD Studentship in "Parameter estimation for assimilation of sea-ice
drift in the Arctic":
The PhD student will use sea-ice drift products from satellites and
assimilate them into the TOPAZ system to jointly estimate the ice-ocean
state and atmospheric parameters (wind stress). The candidate will use a
variant of the Ensemble Kalman Filter for that purpose. The three-year
studentship will begin in January 2008 and is funded by a grant from the
Norwegian Research Council through the project "Forecasting Non-linear
systems with the EnKF and related methods."
