The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management in
Anchorage, Alaska invites applications for the position of Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) Specialist. Duties of the successful candidate
will include geo-spatial analysis consisting of identifying requirements
and implementing advanced analytical techniques necessary to solve
complex GIS issues.
The candidate will manage geo-spatial information, including designing,
developing, and managing the GIS database, developing strategies and
procedures for implementation of a large-scale data repository, and
designing and implementing strategies for GIS data dissemination to
multiple locations. Other duties include providing technical user
support for all aspects of geo-spatial data and software;
troubleshooting issues regarding networks, bottlenecks, server
performance, plotter problems, and ArcGIS configuration; developing and
implementing quality control and assurance guidelines for geo-spatial
data projects; assisting in the development of statewide standards and
applications; working actively to bring consistency to all geo-spatial
data; and working with other federal, state, and local agencies to
coordinate data capture and analysis projects.
The candidate will represent the branch when working with others on GIS
matters and developing and maintaining liaisons and effective working
relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public
to encourage and facilitate cooperative management strategies. The
candidate will work with a diverse group of resources specialists, data
administrators, and managers to coordinate and implement GIS
applications; coordinate locally with managers, resources
specialist/technicians, and IT staff to identify GIS hardware and
processing needs; and develop plans for required upgrades.
