The National Science Foundation is seeking qualified candidates for an
Associate Program Director position within the Office of the Director,
Office of Polar Programs, Division of Arctic Sciences, Arctic System
Science Program (ARCSS) in Arlington, Virginia, USA.

The Division of Arctic Sciences in the Office of Polar Programs (OPP)
supports scientific research in the Arctic, related research, and
operational support. Science programs include disciplinary,
multidisciplinary, and broad, interdisciplinary investigations directed
toward both the Arctic as a region of special scientific interest and a
region important to global systems. Disciplinary interests encompass
atmospheric, biological, physical, Earth, ocean, and social sciences.
The Arctic System Science Program provides opportunities for
interdisciplinary investigations of the Arctic as a system. OPP also
encourages research relevant to both polar regions, especially
glaciology, permafrost, sea ice, oceanography, ecology, and aeronomy.

Major Duties:
The Associate Program Director assists in the implementation, review,
funding, post-award management, and evaluation of the program,
contributes to the intellectual integration with other programs
supported by the Division of Arctic Sciences, represents the program at
national and international meetings, and assists with cross-disciplinary
efforts at NSF. The Associate Program Director also designs and
implements the proposal review and evaluation process for relevant
proposals, selects well-qualified individuals to provide objective
reviews on proposals either as individuals or as members of a panel,
conducts final review of proposals and evaluations and recommends
acceptance or declination, and manages and monitors on-going grants,
contracts, interagency and cooperative agreements to ensure fulfillment
of commitments to NSF. The successful candidate will also evaluate
progress of awards through review and evaluation of reports and
publications submitted by awardees and/or meetings at NSF and during
site visits, contribute to the responsibility for establishing goals and
objectives, initiate new program thrusts and phasing out of old
projects, and recommends new or revised policies and plans in
scientific, fiscal, and administrative matters to improve the activities
and management of the program.

Qualifications Required:
Applicants must possess a PhD or equivalent experience in oceanography,
atmospheric science, terrestrial or marine ecology, biogeochemistry,
geology, hydrology, social science or related field. In addition
applicant must have four years of research, research administration,
and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position. An
understanding of global change processes in the Arctic and some
experience with complex project management is desirable. Interest in
applying natural science results to problems of societal relevance in
the Arctic is very desirable.

This position will be filled on a one- or two-year Visiting Scientist
Appointment, a Federal Temporary Appointment, or an Intergovernmental
