The Norwegian Polar Institute, Polar Climate Program, and Department of
Geology at University of Tromso invite applicants for a four-year PhD
position in marine geology/paleoceanography to begin 1 August 2007. The
position will involve studies of benthic foraminifera and their relation
to the environment and climate changes. The position is part of the
project "Assessment of benthic foraminifera as an environmental proxy in
the Arctic region (FORARC)" funded by the Research Council of Norway.

This project aims to significantly advance benthic foraminifera as proxy
indicators of modern and past environments in the fjords and shelves of
Svalbard, the Barents Sea, and northern Norway. The candidate will be
involved in developing benthic foraminifera as an environmental and
climatic proxy in the Arctic through studies of living foraminifera in
the northern seas and their relation to the environment. Important
methods that will be used are analysis of species distribution of
benthic foraminifera in modern sediment samples and in marine cores.
Further, the candidate will use this new knowledge to reconstruct
environmental changes during the last 2,000 years.

The applicant should have a graduate degree in marine geology or
equivalent education with relevant courses. It is desirable that the
applicant also have experience with the methodologies and analysis of
benthic foraminifera. Women are encouraged to apply.

Interested candidates are invited to send an application including a
letter of motivation, CV, names of two referees, and details of relevant
qualifications and experience. Electronic applications noting ID-SEARCH
