The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is accepting applications for
two postdoctoral positions as part of Permafrost Observatory Project: A
Contribution to the Thermal State of Permafrost in Norway and Svalbard
(TSP NORWAY), an IPY project implemented to measure and model permafrost
distribution, including its thermal state, thickness, and influence on
periglacial geomorphological processes. The research involves
establishing and analyzing the first datasets from the Scandinavian
Permafrost Observatory, focusing on the Troms area in Norway, and the
Svalbard Nordenskiolds Land Permafrost Observatory in central Svalbard.
The first postdoctoral position will focus on periglacial process
research in Svalbard and northern Norway and assist with borehole data
organization in Svalbard. A background in periglacial process research
and experience in arctic fieldwork will be beneficial for the two-year
position, which is based at UNIS.
The second postdoctoral position involves establishing and running
NORPERM, the Norwegian permafrost database, and contributing to modeling
of the permafrost distribution in Norway and Svalbard. Experience with
permafrost database organization and spatial modeling of permafrost will
be beneficial for the two-year position, which is based at the
Geological Survey of Norway in Trondheim.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) relevant to the research
described above. Applications may be written in English or Norwegian,
should contain three complete copies of a CV, list and copies of
publications, and names of references, and must be submitted by Monday,
5 March 2007, to: post [at] unis.no, or via regular mail to:
