Session at Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting
Community Adaptation and Vulnerability in the Arctic Region
7-11 March 2006
Chicago, Illinois

Significant and rapid climate change has been predicted for arctic
regions. While there is agreement that these changes will have
significant implications for communities, the nature of these risks is
poorly understood. The assessment of vulnerabilities has been identified
as a priority area for research. Considerable research is now underway
in different arctic contexts trying to characterize community
vulnerability, but much of it has yet to be published. This session will
bring together researchers working in the Arctic who will focus on: how
communities in the Arctic are experiencing and responding to climatic
and environmental change, the role played by societal and biophysical
change at multiple scales in shaping adaptability and exposure to
environmental risks, and what can be done to increase community
adaptability in light of predictions of rapid future climate change.
Presentations will also examine approaches to vulnerability assessment
and how communities can be actively involved in the research process.
