The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University
of Alaska Fairbanks invites applications for three or more tenure-track
Assistant Professor positions in civil and environmental engineering
starting May 2006 or earlier. These positions require a B.S. or M.S.
degree in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a
closely related discipline. Professional engineering registration and
experience are preferred. Expertise will be sought in the areas of
transportation, engineering/construction management, environmental,
structural, geotechnical, and water resources engineering.

In the area of transportation engineering, expertise with marine, rail,
and aviation (including general aviation) planning, systems and traffic
engineering, geometric design, pavements or other materials is
desirable. In the area of engineering/construction management, expertise
in the organization, planning, scheduling, personnel, and risk analysis
of construction or other engineering projects is desirable. In the area
of environmental engineering, expertise with air pollution in the
construction or transportation areas is desirable. In the area of
structural engineering, expertise related to mechanics of materials,
timber, steel, and concrete design is desirable. In the area of
geotechnical engineering, expertise related to earthquakes, and
ground/foundation interactions is desirable. In the area of water
resources engineering expertise related to water resources engineering,
surface water hydrology, and fluid mechanics is desirable. A specialist
in engineering materials may qualify in the transportation, structural,
or geotechnical areas.

All positions require a strong commitment to teaching at the
undergraduate and graduate level, obtaining funded research, and
publishing in quality journals. The Civil and Environmental Department
(CEE) is a unit of the UAF College of Engineering and Mines (CEM). The
CEE Department has had an ABET accredited undergraduate program since
1941 and currently offers graduate programs in Structures, Geotechnical,
Environmental, Water Resources, Transportation, Arctic Engineering, and
Engineering Management. The Department includes 12 faculty members and
approximately 100 undergraduate and 40 graduate students including 14
Ph.D. students. This advertisement follows recent retirements and an
increase in transportation research opportunities that led to an
expansion of the department.

The climate varies dramatically across Alaska and affects all
engineering endeavors. Research opportunities include: growing Alaska's
infrastructure, understanding and addressing the impacts of climate
change on engineered systems, improving engineering for arctic
conditions, understanding the impact of engineered systems on arctic and
sub-arctic environments, and enhancing natural resource development.
Opportunities are available for interdisciplinary research both within
the CEM and the Institute of Northern Engineering, and with the College
of Science and Mathematics and other UAF research institutes.

The Search Committee will begin the review process on Tuesday, 1
November 2005 and will continue to review applications until the
positions are filled. Preference will be given to U.S. citizens or
permanent residents. Informal communication with the Committee Chair is
encouraged. All applicants must submit a UAF Application Form, a letter
of interest, CV with a complete list of publications, positions held,
teaching and research interests, transcripts, and the names of four
references. In the first paragraph of the letter of interest, applicants
should describe their area or areas of expertise.
