and modelling.

Deadline: 15 November 2003

Background

Since the ERS mission (1991), IFREMER has developed and promoted the
use of scatterometry to monitor sea ice properties (extent, ice type
discriminations, drift,…) at polar ocean and regional scales. This
know-how has been extended to other scatterometers (NSCAT, QuikSCAT),
taking advantage of the larger ground coverage of these sensors, in
conjunction with radiometers (SSM/I) and SAR (ERS, RADARSAT, ENVISAT).
Time series of geophysical products have been produced and used by the
scientific community.

Research & Development plans.

Recently launched satellites (ADEOS II, WindSAT, ENVISAT) will soon
provide validated passive and active remote sensing data to be used
over sea ice covered areas.

Part of the position is aimed at developing the use of geophysical
products in the framework of sea ice modelling (constraints,
validations..) at annual and/or inter-annual time scales. Modifications
of existing products and/or new developments might be needed.
The other part aims at adapting the processing algorithms to the new
sensors or combination of sensors (scatterometer, radiometers,
altimeters and SAR) in order to, both, extend the existing time series
of geophysical products and develop new applications.
