Abstract deadline 30 JANUARY 2003
Objective:
It is the purpose of this workshop to bring together researchers from
the hydrological and climatological communities to examine current
methods of modelling snow in order to develop a more consistent and
comprehensive approach to representing snow in various models.
Rationale:
There is increasing interest in improving cryospheric representations in
climate and hydrological models. In particular, the interaction of snow
and vegetation is being increasingly recognized as an extremely
important factor in regulating global climate and water supply. However,
recent inter-comparisons of snow models for open and vegetated
environments have shown widely divergent results, possibly because
current parameterisations do not include the full range and dynamics of
snow processes.
Structure and Outcome:
The workshop will have two main sessions, one on open environments and
the other on forested environments; both sessions will examine snow
accumulation and ablation processes and modelling. A synthesis session
will highlight recommendations on improving representations of snow
processes in various modelling strategies. Poster sessions will be
available AND POSTERS ARE WELCOME. All accepted abstracts will be
published in the Proceedings of the XXIIIrd IUGG. Further, there is an
option for full manuscripts to be submitted to a Special Issue of the
Journal of Hydrometeorology. Papers submitted to this special issue
will be due to the Convenor by September 2003.
