The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) is a research and service
institute dedicated to atmospheric processes and phenomena. The number
of full time employees is about 525. Out of these, about 180 are in the
research sector. In the new strategy of the Institute, the research on
atmospheric modelling, global change and space weather as well as the
development of remote sensing techniques have been chosen as areas with
the largest emphasis. The research work has been organized under three
divisions, which are complemented by the new Arctic Research Centre in
Northern Finland as an indication of the importance of the Nordic
dimension in the strategy.
Two positions of a Research Professor in the FMI are open:
A Research Professor (grade A28, i.e. monthly salary between 3443-4397
euros) in the area of remote sensing in the Division of Meteorological
Research
The duties of the Professor are:
- to enhance and to co-ordinate the use of remote sensing techniques in
the research and operational activities of the Institute related with
the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere and the surface of the earth
- to be personally responsible for a specific topic to be agreed on in
the area defined above
- to enhance the financing of the research area through successful
application of funding from external national and international sources
- to enhance education of the research staff and publishing of research
articles in peer-reviewed series
A Research Professor (grade A 28, i.e. monthly salary between 3443-4397
euros) in the area of atmospheric modelling in the Division of
Meteorological Research
The duties of the Professor are:
- to enhance and to co-ordinate the use of models in research and
operational questions related with atmospheric physics and chemistry
- to be personally responsible for a specific topic to be agreed on in
the area defined above
- to enhance the financing of the research area through successful
application of funding from external national and international sources
- to enhance education of the research staff and publishing of research
articles in peer-reviewed series
In addition, the Research Professors co-ordinate the research activities
of the Institute on the corresponding strategic areas.
Further requirements are the degree of a PhD, proven leadership and
shown successful results in research and development tasks. The ability
and vision to enhance the international co-operation in the area under
consideration is also required for a successful candidate.
The positions are to be filled from 1 February 2003 for a three year
term.
