Ph.D. STUDENTSHIP

LATE PLEISTOCENE PALEOCLIMATE OF EASTERN BERINGIA

As part of an international research project investigating the Late
Pleistocene paleoclimate of eastern Beringia, a Ph.D. studentship is
available at the Paleolimnology-Paleoecology Laboratory of Centre
d'Études Nordiques, Laval University. The interdisciplinary project aims
at addressing important, long-standing paleoclimatic questions using a
multi-proxy approach including studies of sediment lithology, pollen,
plant macrofossils, chironomids, and diatoms from several sites in the
Yukon and Alaska. The applicant will be expected to carry out
high-resolution analyses of fossil diatom records, use and enlarge
existing diatom-based inference models for the quantitative
reconstruction of paleotemperature and other variables, and contribute
to the synthesis of all paleoclimate data. This research will be
conducted in conjunction with researchers from other Canadian, American,
and Norwegian universities.

Desired qualifications are:
- Masters degree in an ecological science or geoscience completed
within the last three years prior to the start of the doctoral position
which is 1 May 2001;
- solid background in stratigraphy, diatom analysis, paleolimnology,
paleoclimatology;
- knowledge and interest in working with numerical models;
- ability to undertake rigorous fieldwork in remote arctic regions.

The NSERC-funded studentship is offered for up to 4 years. The stipend
is based on the NSERC Studentship guidelines ($CAN 16.5 k/year). Laval
University offers an additional start-up grant of $CAN 2.0 k for the
first year. Starting date will be 1 May 2001 or as soon as the candidate
is available. Closing date for applications is 6 April 2001.
