Summer Institute for Educators

July 31 - Aug 11, 2000

Observing Locally, Connecting Globally (OLCG) is a long-term NSF-funded
science education project based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
(UAF). We invite you to participate in our first summer institute to be
held at UAF from July 31 to August 11, 2000. Participants will receive
training in GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the
Environment), current best practices in science education, and the
integration of local/traditional knowledge into environmental studies.

The goal of this program is to support and enhance original global change
research generated by students doing local investigations in classrooms
across Alaska. These research studies will be supported by the integration
of Native and locally relevant knowledge, as well as community and
university scientists.

Anyone working with students is welcome. We are especially encouraging
teams, educators from rural Alaska, and educators working with a large
number of Native students.

   Cost:  $75 (subsidized by the National Science Foundation)
          Travel assistance and per diem available on an application
          basis

 Credit:  3 credits, NRM 595 or ED 595

Summer Institute for Teachers 2000/2001

I would like to participate in the Local Observations - Global Connections
program and agree to the following:

How I will benefit/what I will receive:
* Travel assistance and per diem are available on an application basis.
Priority will be given to applications from rural areas or who work with
a large number of Native students
* One GLOBE kit
* Two week summer institute on GLOBE and best practices in science
education (July 31 - August 11)
* Three graduate credits from UAF (University of Alaska Fairbanks)
* Follow up support through emails, audio conferences and regional meetings
* Stipend ($500 for 2000-2001 and $500 for 2001-2002)
* Guidance in process-based instruction and authentic assessment
* Guidance in integrating local/cultural knowledge into global change
studies
* Assistance in establishing partnerships with Native experts
* Assistance in establishing partnerships with science professionals

What is expected from me:
* Attendance and active participation at OLCG Summer Institute
(July 31 - August 11)
* "Implement" at least one strand of GLOBE with the students (submitting
data to the GLOBE website) for a period of at least two years
* Develop a unit of my choice during the Institute which integrates GLOBE
and builds on local knowledge and experience to support and extend
studies of global change
* To the best of my ability, collaborate and share materials and ideas with
other teachers in the OLCG Program and other teachers at my school.
* Submit my reflections on "how it's going" in journal entries that will be
collected at least once a month

I understand that it will be my responsibility to replace any GLOBE
equipment if it is broken, stolen, or lost. OLCG CANNOT buy any supplies
for teachers.
