The National Park Service announces the annual "Beringia Days" gathering,
co-hosted by the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, on 22-23 October 1998
in Anchorage, Alaska. Beringia Days is part of an international program
that recognizes and celebrates the history and contemporary exchange of
biological resources and cultural heritage in the Beringia region of
Western Alaska and Northeast Russia.
Topics will include archaeological field schools and discoveries,
traditional knowledge of seabird colonies in Chukotka, Russia, a fungi
comparative study, a Kobuk Sand Dune study, subsistence activities in
Chukotka, and polar bear studies. An evening slide presentation by Pat
O'Hara, a well known Arctic photographer who has traveled extensively in
the Beringia region, will be given at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 22nd.
This preliminary announcement will be followed by a detailed agenda and a
reminder notice shortly before the event. If you would like further
