ARCTIC LOGISTICS (ALIAS) SURVEY
The Arctic Logistics Information Access Service (ALIAS) web site is one way the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs (OPP) has worked to provide researchers access to information on arctic logistics. In order to make ALIAS a more useful tool for arctic researchers, OPP has asked the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS) to work with the research community on its development.
We would like your comments on ALIAS and what improvements would be most useful to you. Please take a moment to fill out this simple survey and return it to ARCUS at milo [at] arcus.org. The survey questions can also be found on the ARCUS Web site and automatically submitted at http://www.arcus.org/ALIAS/. You can view the ALIAS Web site as it is currently configured at http://www.nsf.gov/od/opp/arctic/logistic/start.htm or http://www.arcus.org/ALIAS/ALIAS_Web/.
We envision ALIAS as an interactive site for community surveys, discussions of logistics needs, and continuously updated information on needs and problems, research sites, logistics providers, and other useful resources, including human resources and community contacts. Progress on the priorities outlined in "Logistics Recommendations for an Improved U.S. Arctic Research Capability" http://www.arcus.org/Logistics/ could be tracked, and new priorities identified, as they emerge.
Thank you for taking the time to send us your comments and recommendations to help us meet these goals.

As an arctic researcher, what are your biggest logistical challenges?
As a U.S. Arctic researcher, what countries are the most difficult to
access? What kinds of information should be added to the ALIAS web site to
better support logistical needs, access, and coordination? What research sites would you like to see added to ALIAS? What links to
other sites should be added?Would it be helpful to have investigators with first-hand knowledge
available to help other researchers with logistical questions for specific
sites?Would you be willing to share your experiences related to arctic
logistics with other researchers through the ALIAS web site/email?Should we include on ALIAS maps of existing or planned research sites in
various regions of the Arctic to facilitate logistics coordination and/or
collaborative research endeavors?Should we include on ALIAS an on-line database of research projects that
have been conducted or are planned in various regions of the Arctic? What
are the most important search criteria -by funding agency, principal
investigator (PI), title, short abstract, research location?Should we include an on-line database of publications based on
scientific research in various geographic areas? What are the most
important search criteria--by author(s), title, home institution,
geographic are, region, or country?Would it be helpful to have a list on the ALIAS Web site of local
community contacts and resources in various Arctic regions?Rate the user friendliness of the ALIAS web site? 1--Very user friendly
to 5--difficult to use. What features/aspects would you like to keep?Rate the look of the ALIAS web site? 1--Pleasing look and feel to
5--don't like the look. Specific comments? What features would you like to
keep?Much information on Arctic logistics and Arctic research is now
available on-line and electronically; there is an increasing trend toward
publishing such information only electronically. Tell us what you think
about this.
___ I want access to both on-line and hard copy publications.
___ Don't bother publishing hard copy; on-line is good enough.
___ I prefer hard copy publications; don't bother publishing on-line.
