- University of Greenland seeks Candidates for two PhD Positions
Social Science and Climate and Society
Nuuk, Greenland
The University of Greenland in association with the Greenland Climate
Research Centre at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, seeks
candidates for two PhD studentships in social sciences to work on topics
that advance understanding of climate change in Greenland. The
positions, which are available for three years, will begin September
2012, and are based in Nuuk, Greenland.
The studentships are part of a new five-year research program on Climate
and Society in Greenland. The program seeks applications for research
that will increase scholarly and policy-relevant knowledge on the
impacts of climate change in a Greenlandic context. Areas of study
include the impacts of climate change on resource development, the
military, and societal and personal security; local perceptions of
climate, weather, and environment; adaptation strategies in local
communities; conservation and management of living resources;
environmental health, well-being, and food security; public
understanding of climate change; and policy processes and dialogue. The
successful candidates will be expected to carry out original research.
Applicants should have a Master's degree in social/cultural
anthropology, sociology, geography, economics, political science, or a
closely related social science. Knowledge of Greenlandic, Danish, and
English will be an advantage.
Application deadline: Tuesday, 15 May 2012.

- University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks PhD Candidates
Water Mobility in Frozen Soils
Fairbanks, Alaska
The Institute of Northern Engineering at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks seeks candidates for a PhD position to study water mobility in
frozen soils. The position is scheduled to begin in September 2012 and
is based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
This project will use a combination of state-of-the-art measurement
techniques to quantify relationships among key variables in soil
freezing and thawing processes, namely unfrozen water content and
mobility, soil zeta potential, and soil micro-fabric. The long-term
research goal is to improve understanding of frozen ground behavior as
it interacts with thermal changes in the environment, an essential
knowledge base for predicting permafrost response to climate change and
for developing robust building design in cold regions.
Application deadline: Tuesday, 1 May 2012.
Applications will be reviewed immediately upon receipt.

- Four PhD Positions Open at Stockholm University
Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography
Stockholm, Sweden
The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) seeks
candidates for four PhD positions in atmospheric sciences and
oceanography. The positions are full time for a maximum of four years
and are based in Stockholm, Sweden.
MISU research activities include experimental, theoretical, and
numerical studies of atmospheric and oceanic processes with particular
attention devoted to their effects on the global climate. The
atmospheric gases, particles, clouds, and precipitation are investigated
experimentally with the help of satellites, rockets, balloons, aircraft,
and ships as well as ground-based observations. Numerical investigations
are undertaken with process models, weather-forecast models, ocean
models, and regional and global climate models.
Applicants must have completed a basic degree or the equivalent, which
corresponds to four years' university study, with additionally required
coursework in meteorology, oceanography, physics or chemistry,
mathematics, and independent project work. The requirements can be met
by having acquired the corresponding experience, in Sweden or abroad.
Application deadline: Saturday, 5 May 2012.

- University of Oxford seeks Postdoctoral Researcher
Arctic Ocean Modeling
Oxford, United Kingdom
The University of Oxford Department of Earth Sciences seeks candidates
for a postdoctoral research position in arctic ocean modeling. The
position is funded for a period of three years available starting
1 August 2012 and is based in Oxford, England.
The successful candidate will set up a process model of the Arctic Ocean
and sea ice system. The model will be used to investigate the dynamics
that govern the present day arctic ocean circulation, and the mechanisms
by and timescales on which a seasonally-ice-free Arctic will respond to
surface forcing.
Candidates should have research experience and a PhD in physical
oceanography or a closely related branch of physics, mathematics, or
earth sciences. They should have experience in numerical modeling,
combined with an interest in dynamical theory and in ocean and sea-ice
observations.
The post is based in the Department of Earth Sciences and is closely
linked to the sub-department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Planetary
Physics. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with other
members of The Environment of the Arctic: Climate, Ocean and Sea Ice
(TEA-COSI) consortium project and with a range of international project
partners.
Applications are to be made online. To apply, or for further details
