The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) seeks
applicants to a two-year researcher position in the Mohn-Sverdrup
Center. The position will be located in Bergen, Norway, and there is the
possibility of prolongation.

The position will be part of a team working to further develop and
validate the TOPAZ ice-ocean assimilation system for the high latitudes
and Arctic Ocean. TOPAZ uses the HYCOM ocean model, coupled with a sea
ice model, an ecosystem model, and the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) for
assimilation of both remote sensing and in-situ data. TOPAZ is
established as the arctic forecasting component of the European funded
MyOcean project and is exploited for operational use at met.no. A
20-year reanalysis is also being completed with the same system.

The goal of the position is to carry out innovative methodological
developments of the TOPAZ system, taking advantage of its ensemble
formulation. In particular the applicant will estimate parameters of the
sea ice model following the Lagrangian ice drift. Another task will be
to evaluate the potential impact of new data streams like gliders and
suggest optimal deployment strategies. The candidate will interpret the
output from realistic ocean models and publish the results in
peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Applicants must have a PhD in applied mathematics or oceanography, with
practical experience in numerical ocean modeling and a strong technical
background in parallel programming (preferably in Fortran). Experience
in data assimilation is a plus.

The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research seeks a
research scientist for the Sea Ice Physics department under the Climate
Sciences division. The position is temporary (three years), and will be
based in Bremerhaven, Germany.

The successful candidate will work on developing a model system for
decadal climate prediction for a research project entitled Model
Initialization by Partially Coupled Spin-Up. The tasks include
conceptual work in decadal prediction, implementation, and analysis of
simulations with coupled global climate models. Novel approaches will be
applied in order to initialize the climate system as well as testing
forecasts from a period of several years to decades.

Applicants will preferably have a doctoral degree in meteorology,
oceanography, geophysics, physics, or related a discipline. Knowledge of
numerical simulation of hydrodynamic processes and of climate physics is
expected. Experience with coupled climate models or forecast of climate
phenomena is considered an advantage. Substantial computer knowledge
(UNIX, Fortran, script languages, visualization tools) and interest in
the role of sea ice within the climate system is expected, as is
willingness to participate in expeditions to the polar regions.

  1. Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks Two Postdoctoral Researchers
    Permafrost Carbon-Climate Modeling

Two postdoctoral research associate positions are available within the
Climate Change Science Institute and the Environmental Sciences Division
of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The positions are expected to be two
to three years in duration, and will be based in .

The position targets ecosystem scientists with the necessary experience
for and interest in contributing to a research project addressing the
pan-arctic scale permafrost carbon feedback to global climate. The
project will include data synthesis and scaling components, including an
emphasis on remote sensing analyses, toward an improved representation
of permafrost carbon dynamics within land surface components of Earth
System Model frameworks. The successful candidates will join a
multidisciplinary team of investigators who are investigating how
permafrost degradation in a warming Arctic will affect feedbacks to the
climate system.

A PhD in ecology or related discipline is required. The ideal candidate
will have a particular expertise in remote sensing applications in
ecosystem analysis, ecosystem carbon cycle modeling, or both. Candidates
with strong numerical and analytical skills, along with proficiency in
scientific programming, are preferred.

    Arctic Council Secretariat

The Arctic Council seeks applications from candidates for the first
Director of the Arctic Council Secretariat. The position is on a
four-year appointment basis with possible renewal for one additional
term, and will be based in Tromso, Norway.

The successful candidate will coordinate the work of the Arctic Council
Secretariat, reporting to the Senior Arctic Officials (SAOs).
Responsibilities include the overall management and administration of
the Secretariat's activities, including finance, administration,
communications and outreach; ensuring the start-up of the Secretariat by
May 2013, including the signing of a Host Country Agreement with the
Government of Norway; ensuring that the Secretariat is registered and
complies with the laws of Norway; and hiring staff.

university degree in a relevant field or a combination of proven
qualifications and experience, and have a minimum of 10 years of
professional experience in management that would be transferable to the
position.
