Water Mobility in Frozen Soils

The University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks a PhD student to study water
mobility in frozen soils, through a research program sponsored by the
National Science Foundation (NSF). The position is expected to provide a
twelve-month salary for four years, and will be based in Fairbanks,
Alaska.
The project will use a combination of state-of-the-art measurement
techniques to quantify relationships among key variables in soil
freezing and thawing processes, namely unfrozen water content and
mobility, soil zeta potential, and soil micro-fabric. Results from this
research will improve understanding of how frozen ground behaves as it
interacts with thermal changes in the surrounding environment.
Priority will be given to candidates with a BS or MSc degree in
engineering or physical science, and experience with, or strong interest
in, soils, physical chemistry, surface chemistry, and NMR, ESEM, and XRD
measurement techniques. Interested candidates should send a letter of

- Penn State seeks 5 Postdoctoral Researchers

The Penn State Institutes of Energy and Environment (PSIEE) seek to hire
five postdoctoral research scholars. The positions will be based in
University Park, Pennsylvania.
The positions will each be based in one of five areas, including Water
Science (broadly defined) and Biogeochemical Cycles. The successful
applicants will collaborate with more than one scientist/faculty member
at Penn State and leverage resources or projects on-going at Penn State.
A short research prospectus is required.
These are prestigious two-year appointments with budget for research
materials, travel, etc. The positions will start in the fall, but the
specific date is flexible.

- Memorial University seeks Three Research Associates

Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland, Canada
Memorial University/Labrador Institute seeks to hire three research
associates. The positions will be based in Happy Valley-Goose Bay,
Newfoundland, Canada.
One position will be responsible for conducting scientific research to
provide mining and mineral exploration companies, as well as relevant
licensing and governance bodies operating in Labrador, with key
technical information that can ultimately lead toward the opening of new
mineral mining operations. The second will conduct research that will
provide key information leading to the development of appropriate,
evidence-based curricula for Innu and Inuit education students,
encompassing the fields of education, social, historical, and political
studies. The last will be responsible for leading the development of a
soils research program based in Labrador which will provide key
technical information that can lead to sustainable development and
evidence-based resource management.
