The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is offering a short course on
interdisciplinary scenario modeling and analysis. Entitled "Planning for
Arctic Futures: Alaska Energy Scenarios," the class will be held 6-10
August 2012 (full class for graduate or advanced undergraduate students)
or August 7-9 (non-credit core course for professionals and others).
The course provides an overview of key approaches in developing
scenarios of plausible futures and key factors that drive developments
in the North. A group of experts from UAF (N. Fresco, J. Walsh, S. Rupp,
M. Mueller-Stoffels, A. Lovecraft, H. Eicken) and Alberta Innovates (A.
Meisen, L. Macklin) will lead participants through a scenarios
development exercise focusing on the topic of energy extraction,
generation, consumption, and their consequences. Participants will then
learn about and explore advanced scenarios analysis approaches.
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Understand the evolution of social-environmental systems on
timescales of years to decades;
- Understand the characteristics and applicability of the principal
foresight methods used for exploring long-term future issues;
- Understand the key aspects of developing and using scenarios as a
decision-making tool;
- Perform the creation and analysis of basic scenarios, exemplified
by energy production and use in Alaska;
- Apply the basic scenarios to the development of policy proposals
and further individual and group research projects; and
- Inform, by using the learnings from the course, the needs and
research priorities of the Arctic Council Working Groups.
