The Biology Department at Universite Laval seeks candidates for a
tenure-track position in Numerical Modeling of Arctic Marine Ecosystems.
The position will be based in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
The appointee is expected to adapt or develop numerical models that
couple biotic and physical processes, with the aim of understanding the
influence of atmospheric and oceanic processes on the biological
productivity of Arctic Seas. The successful candidate will teach both
undergraduate and graduate level courses in his/her area of expertise
(e.g. introduction to numerical modeling, biostatistics, structure and
functioning of ecosystems), and is expected to supervise graduate
students and develop an independent grant-funded research program.
Applicants must have a PhD in oceanography or a related field, and
expertise in the modeling of oceanic circulation or the modeling of
biological or biogeochemical processes. The appointee will be expected
to teach in French within one year of appointment.
Priority will be granted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

- North Slope Borough seeks Wildlife Biologist
Department of Wildlife Management
Barrow, Alaska
The North Slope Borough Department of Wildlife Management is seeking a
Wildlife Biologist to assist with on-going studies, and the design and
implementation of new studies, on important subsistence species in
northern Alaska. The position will be based in Barrow, Alaska.
The primary focus of the position will be on marine mammals (e.g. arctic
pinnipeds, polar bears) that might be impacted by oil and gas
exploration and development and climate change. Field research will be
expected, and will include working in close collaboration with other
biologists (sometimes from other agencies/organizations) and Inupiat
hunters. The position will primarily focus on research but the
successful applicant will also be required to provide advice to North
Slope officials on management issues and Environmental Impact
Statements, etc.
Preferred qualifications:
- A strong background in marine mammal ecology, with emphasis on
arctic mammals,
- Field experience in remote locations,
- Experience working with Native peoples and issues,
- Strong collaborative experience,
- Experience in the application of GIS to studies of wildlife, and
- Enthusiasm for living in a bush community.
This is a full-time, permanent position but is partially dependent on
grant money. Funding for approximately 18 months of employment is
currently available, and there are many opportunities for additional
sources.
