International Polar Week, a global celebration of the polar regions held
each equinox, is scheduled for 16-22 September 2012. You can join the
celebration in a number of ways:

  • Engage in a Global Activity -- Flakes, Blobs, Bubbles: An Ice Core Art
Project explores how ice sheets and glaciers form as well as explores
why and how scientists study ice. The project is available in several
different languages. Further information can be found at:
    http://icecoreart.weebly.com/index.html.

  • Connect to the poles with researchers who are working the Arctic and
Antarctic through real-time, interactive webinar events. Multiple events
are scheduled for participation from around the globe. Learn more about
    the events and register at:
    http://www.polartrec.com/polar-connect/register.

Event 1: Tuesday, 18 September 2012 at 13:00 GMT -- This event will
feature researchers Brittany Potter, John Lenters, and Anne-Mathilde
Thierry. Anne-Mathilde is a French PhD student studying Adelie
penguins, while Brittany and John study lakes in Barrow, Alaska.

Event 2: Thursday, 20 September 2012 at 18:00 GMT -- This event will
feature researchers Allen Pope and Reny Tyson. Allen is completing
his graduate work in glaciology and lives in Cambridge, England and
Reny studies humpback whales in Antarctica through Duke University.

  • Make broad impacts by joining scientists and educators in online
discussions on how to bring the polar regions into the classroom and
    community.

Event 3: Monday, 17 September at 20:00 GMT -- Polar Educators
International (PEI) will hold a webinar for APECS members and
educators to discuss bringing polar science into classrooms and
    communities. Register here at:
    http://www.polartrec.com/polar-connect/register.

  • Access polar week activities and presentations online to share with a
school or do in your own classroom. Check out the online resources
created by educators and scientists, at:
    http://www.polartrec.com/collections/international-polar-week.

  • Ask questions and have them answered by scientists that work in the
poles -- The APECS Education and Outreach Committee is launching an 'Ask
a Scientist' forum for Polar Week. Over 40 scientists and experts are
ready to answer your questions! Simply email your polar research related
questions to ask-a-scientist [at] apecs.is between 16-22 September 2012, and
the APECS Ask-a-Scientist team will respond. Questions and answers will
be posted for all to view. Ask the questions at:
    http://tinyurl.com/APECS-AskAScientist.

  • Launch a virtual balloon and watch the learning community grow, at:
