The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences
(CIRES), an interdisciplinary research institute within the University
of Colorado Boulder, seeks a junior tenure-track appointment
specializing in climate science of cold regions. The position will be
based in Boulder, Colorado.

The successful applicant will create a research program with productive
collaborations both within and outside of CIRES leading to novel
insights about climate mechanisms in cold regions, which may include the
collection and analysis of original data. Candidates who employ
technologies including satellite remote sensing, suborbital data
acquisition, ground-based instrumentation, or advanced earth system
models in ways that enhance existing expertise within CIRES are
particularly desirable. The successful candidate will have a
tenure-track affiliation in a relevant academic department such as
Geography or Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. The distribution of
effort will be 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service.

    Permafrost Carbon Dynamics

The College of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of
Exeter seeks an Associate Research Fellow to carry out research as part
of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded project
"Carbon Cycling Linkages of Permafrost Systems." The position is
available for 30 months starting 1 February 2013, and will be based in
Exeter, United Kingdom.

The post will include extended periods of summer fieldwork in northern
Canada, measuring methane and carbon dioxide fluxes from soils,
monitoring soil physical conditions, and collecting peat and mineral
soil samples for laboratory analysis. The position will also involve
presenting information on research progress and outcomes, and
communicating complex information orally, in writing and electronically.

Applicants should possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate
sufficient knowledge of biogeochemistry and related research methods and
techniques to work within the wider project. Applicants will be able to
work effectively both in remote field locations and in the laboratory,
establishing soil and permafrost monitoring sites, making chamber flux
measurements, collecting gas samples for 14C analysis, and collecting
soil samples for laboratory analyses, including hydrological
reconstructions using testate amoebe.

The University of Sheffield seeks to fill a research associate position
in plant ecology/biogeochemistry, to work on a Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC) funded project entitled "Carbon Cycle Linkages
of Permafrost Systems." The position will be based in Sheffield, United
Kingdom.

This project aims to better understand the relationships between plant
communities (including their biodiversity and traits) and their ability
to protect (insulate) permafrost and control active layer depth. It also
seeks to understand how these plant-permafrost interactions control
ecosystem carbon balance.

Applicants should have an excellent track record in one or more of the
following areas: plant ecology/ecophysiology, plant-soil interactions,
ecosystem carbon and/or nutrient cycling, and boreal or arctic ecosystem
responses to global change. A PhD in a relevant discipline (or
equivalent experience) and experience designing and developing research
are required. The post is fixed-term for a period of 30 months.

    Arctic and North Atlantic Climate Variability

The department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) seeks a postdoctoral
candidate as part of "Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the
Ocean" (ECCO) and related projects. The position will be based in
Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The successful candidate will conduct research on arctic and North
Atlantic climate variability over recent decades. The group has
assembled a wealth of satellite and in-situ ocean and sea ice
observations, and is developing a synthesis of these observations into a
dynamically consistent time-evolving state of the coupled ocean and sea
ice system, based on the MIT general circulation model (MITgcm). The
observations, the state estimate, and the model itself will serve as
tools for investigating various aspects of North Atlantic and Arctic
Ocean and sea ice dynamics and variability. Implications for quantifying
uncertainties and for the predictability of various climate metrics are
also being sought.

A strong background in ocean, sea ice or climate physics, climate
modeling, a relevant topic of applied maths, or a related field is a
plus, as are strong programming and scientific computing skills.

  1. Memorial University seeks Two Postdoctoral Researchers
    Social, Health, and Biophysical Impacts of Mineral Development in
    the Arctic

The Nunatsiavut Government, Memorial University, and Trent University
invite applications for two postdoctoral researcher positions to direct
research into (1) social indicators of community health and wellbeing
and their association with mineral development in Nunatsiavut, Labrador;
and (2) impacts and monitoring of mineral development on biophysical
systems in Nunatsiavut.

One position will work on community-based and/or environmental research
into the social dimensions of the Voisey's Bay development. Applicants
to this position must have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g. geography,
sociology, anthropology, environmental studies), and ideal candidates
will have experience in community-based and/or Aboriginal and northern
research. Experience in research on mining and health/social development
is also an asset.

The other position will work on community-based and/or environmental
research into the biophysical dimensions of the Voisey's Bay
development. Applicants to this position must have a PhD in a relevant
field (e.g. physical geography, aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology,
biology), and ideal candidates will have experience in northern field
research and community relations, and interest or experience in more
than one area of environmental sciences and the monitoring of
environmental systems and impacts. Experience in research on mining and
environmental impacts is also an asset.

Both positions are for two-year terms with possible renewal or
extension, beginning 1 January 2013. The researchers will be expected to
live and work for extended periods of time in the community of Nain.
