The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) has a range of
events planned for those of all career stages attending AGU this year,
including a mentor panel, a presence at the Exploration Station, a
meet-up with Polar Educators International (PEI), representation at the
International Polar Initiative Town Hall Meeting, and Famelab.
Exploration Station
Help out at the AGU Exploration Station! Sunday, 2 December from
1:00-5:00 p.m. in Moscone South 103-104. This event is open to the
public and is often attended by hundreds of families from around the San
Francisco Bay area. Anyone interested is invited to help communicate how
cool science is -- no experience necessary. Email Heidi Roop
(roop.heidi [at] gmail.com) to find out more and to sign up.
Mentor Panel & Meetup
This panel discussion, led by experts in the Cryospheric Sciences, will
address the exciting career opportunities and challenges faced by
scientists who study these frozen realms. The panel will introduce
themselves briefly and then open the floor for a moderated conversation
on any aspect of careers in polar science that the audience would like.
This event is held in partnership with the Cryosphere Focus Group of the
American Geophysical Union. Golden Gate C1, SF Marriot Marquis;
6:15-7:15 p.m. on Monday, 3 December. After the panel, the evening of
discussion and networking will be continued at John Colins (138 Minna
Street, just two blocks away from the Marriot). A room is reserved
starting at 7:30 p.m., and people at all career stages are welcome, even
if they cannot attend the panel.
APECS Outreach Meeting
Also on Monday, 3 December at 6:15-7:15 p.m. in the Marriott Marquis 4th
Floor Pacific Room J, APECS members are invited to meet with members of
Polar Educators International and others involved with outreach to
discuss polar engagement strategies and activities. Comments or
questions should be directed to Sarah Crowley (crowley [at] arcus.org).
International Polar Initiative Town Hall
The International Polar Initiative (IPI) Concept Note
(http://www.iasc.info/index.php/home/initiatives/22) will be discussed
at a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, 4 December at 12:30-1:30 p.m. in
Moscone West 2005. The official AGU listing is available at:

Famelab
At regional heats throughout the U.S. over the next 18 months, join
early career scientists from numerous disciplines and compete to convey
your research or related science concepts. Each contestant has the
spotlight for only three minutes. No slides, no charts, just the power
of words and any prop you can hold in your hands. A panel of experts in
both science and science communication will do the judging. The first
competition is at AGU and space is limited. For further information,
please go to: http://astrobiologyfamelab.arc.nasa.gov/.
