- University of Colorado seeks PhD and MSc Students
Arctic Sensitivity to Climate Perturbations and a Millennial
Perspective on Current Warming Derived from Shrinking Ice Caps
Boulder, Colorado
The University of Colorado is seeking a PhD and MSc student to work on a
new collaborative research campaign between my group and collaborators
Jason Briner (University at Buffalo) and Nat Lifton (PRIME, Purdue)
entitled "Arctic Sensitivity to Climate Perturbations and a Millennial
Perspective on Current Warming Derived from Shrinking Ice Caps." The
positions will be based in Boulder, Colorado.
The PhD student will focus on entombed ancient landscapes, including in
situ vegetation and ancient weathered rocks emerging beneath thin ice
caps that are currently receding at a dramatic pace. For the PhD
position, experience in the processing of rocks for cosmogenic exposure
dating would be a great advantage; familiarity with Matlab helpful and
an MSc completed preferred. The MSc student will focus on refining the
history of Neoglaciation from the moraine records and sediment cores
from nearby lakes. This project will include helicopter-supported
fieldwork in arctic Canada in 2013 and 2014.

- Arctic Centre Seeks to Fill Three Positions
Environmental Impact Assessments Project
Rovaniemi, Finland
The Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland is seeks three experts
for a project entitled 'Testing Improvement Processes of Finnish
Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and the Modes of Application in
the Arctic Regions of Finland and Russia." The positions will be based
in Rovaniemi, Finland.
The Barents EIA project aims at designing a roadmap together with
decision makers, companies, and other stakeholders to improve EIA
processes for sustainable development in the Arctic. The project will
provide Finnish companies with good practices and free access to an
online information service that contains information about environmental
legislation, rules, and contact persons/institutions in Finland and in
Russia. The project promotes high environmental standards and business
opportunities in arctic Russia and Finland.
The tasks of the project are as follows:
- To support companies to develop their EIA processes in Northern
Finland and arctic Russia;
- To investigate the needs of companies regarding EIA; and

- British Antarctic Survey seeks PhD Student
Climate Program
Cambridge, United Kingdom
The Climate Program at the British Antarctic Survey seeks a PhD student
for a project entitled 'Investigating the Spatial Distribution of Fohn
Conditions and Their Impact on Surface Melt Over the Larsen Ice Shelf.'
The position will begin October 2013, and be based in Cambridge, United
Kingdom.
The project will use archived output from the Antarctic Mesoscale
Prediction System (AMPS) to spatially analyze surface parameters during
cases of Fohn events identified in Automatic Weather Station (AWS)
measurements during 2011. High resolution model simulations with the
Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model will be used to compare how
the representation of these cases differs depending on model resolution.
Model data and measurements from various AWS on the Larsen Ice Shelf
will be combined to study the spatial and temporal distribution of Fohn
events over the entire Larsen Ice Shelf, their impact on surface melt
conditions, and their potential role in past and potential future ice
shelf break ups in the area.
Applicants should hold or expect to gain a first or upper second-class
degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, physics, or a closely
related relevant discipline. As the use of a sophisticated numerical
model is an essential part of the project, candidates should be highly
numerate and must be able to demonstrate evidence of good computing/IT
skills. The studentship will provide excellent training in the analysis
of large datasets and in numerical modeling. No fieldwork is planned for
this project.
Application deadline: Thursday, 31 January 2013.

University of Tromso seeks Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Ancient DNA Studies
Tromso, NorwayThe University of Tromso seeks a postdoctoral fellow for a project
entitled 'Ancient DNA of Northwest Europe Reveals Responses to
Climate Change.' The position will start as soon as possible, and be
based in Tromso, Norway
The primary objective of the project is to explore the occurrence of
boreal species at northern latitudes by ancient DNA analyses. Other
goals include confirming the occurrence of trees and other boreal taxa
during the LGM period (22,000 - 13,000 BP) at Andoya; determining the
occurrence of boreal species on Svalbard during the Holocene warm
period; evaluating the representation of current surrounding vegetation
in modern lake DNA; testing if pollen may contribute to DNA recovered in
ancient soils; and evaluating implications for inferred species
migration rates as well as climate reconstruction.
Application deadline: Thursday, 31 January 2013.
