    CAFF Flora Group Annual Meetings and
    International Arctic Vegetation Database Workshop

Organizers announce the annual Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna
(CAFF) Working Group (CFG) meeting, the International Arctic Vegetation
Database (IAVD) Workshop, and a joint meeting of both groups. The three
events will precede the 2013 Arctic Science Summit Week and convene
14-16 April 2013 in Krakow, Poland.

CAFF is the biodiversity working group of the Arctic Council, whose
mandate is to address the conservation of arctic biodiversity and to
communicate its findings to the governments and residents of the Arctic
helping to promote practices that ensure the sustainability of the
Arctic's living resources.

The CFG annual meeting will convene 12-14 April 2013. CFG promotes,
encourages, and coordinates international conservation of arctic flora,
vegetation, and habitats as well as research activities. Meeting agenda
items will include:

- The Arctic Plant Portal,
- Red list of arctic plants, and
- CFG activities associated with the Panarctic Species List (PASL).

Organizers request that CFG members planning to attend the meeting
inform Kari Fannar Larusson (kari [at] caff.is) at the CAFF Secretariat.

The joint CAFF CFG and IAVD meeting will convene 14 April. The meeting
agenda will include the IAVD concept, progress to date, and status of
the circumpolar vegetation datasets.

The IAVD workshop will convene 14-16 April 2013. The goal of the
workshop is to engage the circumpolar community of arctic vegetation
scientists in assembling this first vegetation database for the arctic
tundra biome. Part of the meeting will be devoted to reviewing the
status of vegetation databases in the arctic countries. Topics of
invited talks include:

- Status of arctic vegetation plot datasets and vegetation
classification in the Arctic,
- Status of arctic vegetation databases,
- Prototype IAVD databases, and
- Possible applications of the database.

The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) is supporting the
workshop by providing funding to help some key participants get to the
IAVD Workshop.

    Understanding North

Organizers announce the multidisciplinary conference entitled
"Understanding North," which will convene 25-26 April 2013 in Umea,
Sweden.

The conference is arranged by the Umea University Faculty of Arts to
celebrate the status of Umea as European Capital of Culture 2014.
Conference themes will include maps, photography and literature,
quality-of-life in the circumpolar region, and climate change.
Contributions will subsequently be peer-reviewed and published in the
Journal of Northern Studies.

The conference is free of charge. Participation in the conference
includes lunch, coffee, and the conference dinner.

    Barents Regional Cooperation - The First Twenty Years

Organizers announce that a symposium entitled "Barents Regional
Cooperation - The First Twenty Years" will convene 12 February 2013 in
Rovaniemi, Finland.

In recognition of the twentieth anniversary of the Barents cooperation,
the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland and the Norwegian embassy
in Finland have jointly organized the symposium to discuss the past,
present, and future of the cooperation.

The symposium offers an open meeting place to discuss multilateral
cooperation on the regional level. The program will include
presentations by former and current regional representatives in the
Barents regional committee, regional experts, and active participants
from various projects in the region.

    13th Nordic Tag Conference
    21-15 April 2013

The Department of Archaeology and The Center for Research in Humanities
at the University of Iceland announce open registration and a call for
papers for the 13th Nordic Tag conference. Entitled
"Borders-Margins-Fringes: Archaeologies on/from the Edge," the
conference will convene 21-25 April 2013 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The conference will provide a discussion forum of theoretical debate in
archaeology, cultural heritage management, material culture studies, and
other related disciplines.

Open session topics will include:

- Materialized margins: the reflection on borders, margin, and
fringes through material culture;
- At the crossroads of archaeology and folklore;
- Practice-led theory;
- Taking the bull by the horns: debating the roles of animals in
northern human societies;
- Situating the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in northwest Europe;
- A stitch in time: combining analytical chronology in a
Scandinavian context;
- Fringes of Christianity;
- Behind the (Iron) Curtain: looking back on Soviet archaeology;
- Community archaeology and the university;
- Foregrounding things: forms and faults of representation;
- Is everybody doing it? The role and value of analogical reasoning
in archaeology reconsidered;
- Sites of gathering, cult, and assembly: a perspective across time;
- Archaeological exhibitionism; and
- Singularities: the particular and/or relational.

    43rd International Arctic Workshop
    11-13 March 2013
    Amherst, Massachusetts

Organizers announce that the abstract deadline for the 43rd
International Arctic Workshop has been extended to Wednesday, 20
February 2013. The workshop will be held 11-13 March 2013 in Amherst,
Massachusetts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. On Sunday, 10
March 2013, a fieldtrip entitled "Deglacial History and Environments of
the Pioneer Valley" will be led by Julie Brigham-Grette.

The workshop is an annual gathering for international researchers to
present work on any aspect of high-latitude environments (past, present,
and future). Organizers strive for a relaxed, friendly, and interactive
experience, fostered in part by the workshop's relatively small size.
Researchers are invited to present their very latest research; the
abstract deadline is just a few weeks before the workshop. Student
participation is strongly encouraged, with partial support available to
those making presentations (limited number of slots).

Abstract and registration deadline: Wednesday, 20 February 2013.
