8th Antarctic Meteorological Observing, Modeling, and Forecasting
10-12 June 2013

The Antarctic Meteorological Research Center (AMRC) at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison announces the 8th Antarctic Meteorological Observing,
Modeling, and Forecasting Workshop (AMOMFW). It will be held 10-12 June
2013, at the University of Wisconsin's Pyle Center in Madison,
Wisconsin. There will be an informal icebreaker on 9 June.

This workshop brings together those with research and
operational/logistical interests in Antarctic meteorology and
forecasting and related disciplines. As in the past, the annual
activities and status of the observing (e.g. Automatic Weather Stations)
and modeling (Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System) efforts will be
addressed, and feedback and results from their user communities will be
solicited. More broadly, this workshop also is a forum for current
results and ideas in Antarctic meteorology, numerical weather
prediction, and weather forecasting from contributors around the world.
There will be discussions on the relationships among international
efforts and Antarctic forecasting, logistical support, and science.
Papers and posters on these topics are welcomed.

Organizers announce that the 2013 American Water Resources Association
(AWRA) Alaska Section Annual Conference will be held 4-7 March 2013. It
will be convened at the BP Energy Center in Anchorage, Alaska.

This annual conference gathers water resource professionals from state
and federal agencies, universities, and private companies to celebrate
hydrologic challenges and opportunities that are unique to Alaska and
permafrost regions. There will be a Well Log Tracking System (WELTS)
workshop on Monday, 4 March. Additionally, the conference committee is
organizing a field trip on Thursday, 7 March to two major Ship Creek
water resource facilities: Ship Creek Dam and Reservoir run by Doyon
Utilities, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game William Jack
Hernandez Fish Hatchery.

SCAR Biology Symposium: Life in Antarctica

Organizers of the 11th Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR)
Biology Symposium announce that the deadline for abstract submission has
been extended to Thursday, 28 February 2013. The symposium, entitled
'Life in Antarctica: Boundaries and Gradients in a Changing
Environment,' will be held 16-19 July 2013 in Barcelona, Spain.

This symposium links the functional importance of land and water
ecosystems and their biocomplexity under an ecosystemic perspective in
order to understand: the Antarctic trophic web; effects of human impacts
such as the ozone hole, climate change, and the increase in tourism
activities; the flexible boundaries and dynamic gradients in Antarctic
ecosystem; and the Antarctic marine biodiversity through its patterns,
processes, and trends. The symposium is organized around six themes:

- Terrestrial biocomplexity: Function and linkages in land and water
ecosystems
- Integrated perspectives on Antarctic marine ecosystems: From krill
to top predators
- Human impacts on Antarctic ecosystems: From global change to small
scale impacts
- Physical and biogeochemical processes in the Antarctic ecosystem:
Flexible boundaries and dynamic gradients
- Antarctic marine biodiversity: Patterns, processes and trends in
an ancient ecosystem
- Outreach and Education

Abstracts are invited for poster and/or oral presentations relevant to
one of these themes. Authors must be submitted online, and authors must
indicate which theme's referees should evaluate the submission. Final
session titles and paper allocation will be made by the Local Scientific
Organizing Committee at the time of the final program composition.

U.S. CLIVAR Sponsored International Workshop

The U.S. Climate Variability and Predictability Research Program
(CLIVAR) will sponsor an international workshop entitled "Understanding
the Response of Greenland's Marine Terminating Glaciers to Oceanic and
Atmospheric Forcing." It is scheduled to convene 4-7 June 2013 in
Boston, Massachusetts.

The widespread retreat and speedup of marine-terminating outlet glaciers
in Greenland over the past two decades has led to a doubling of the ice
sheet's contribution to sea level rise and increased the freshwater
input to the North Atlantic. Its coincidence with a period of oceanic
and atmospheric warming suggests a common climate driver. Yet the
forcings and mechanisms behind these dynamic responses are poorly
understood and either missing or crudely parameterized in climate and
ice sheet models. Progress on this complex topic requires a
collaborative, international, cross-disciplinary and multi-faceted
approach. With this workshop, organizers seek to bring together
oceanographers, glaciologists, atmospheric and climate scientists;
including observationalists, modelers, and theoreticians, working on all
aspects of this problem.

A whitepaper initiated by the U.S. CLIVAR Working Group on Greenland Ice
Sheet Ocean interactions (GRISO) serves as background to this workshop.

Southern Ocean Observing System Asian Workshop
23-24 May 2013

The Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) Scientific Steering Committee
announces a 2-day Asian Workshop. It will be convened 23-24 May 2013 in
Shanghai, China.

The workshop will highlight Asian activities in Southern Ocean
observations and research, and stimulate discussion about enhanced
involvement in SOOS from Asian countries. It will provide an opportunity
to highlight research and observations being undertaken by Asian
countries in the Southern Ocean and encourage further involvement from
Asian countries in SOOS activities.

The first day of the workshop will feature oral presentations by
representatives from the Asian scientific community to illustrate their
national and organizational research and observation activities and
capabilities (current and planned) in the Southern Ocean. SOOS
Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) members will also present an
overview of their international activities in the Southern Ocean.
Attendance on day one of the workshop is open to all interested parties,
but registration is essential. If you would like to attend, please

2013.

The second day of the workshop is closed (invited participants and SSC
members only) for small working group discussions. Requests to attend
