- Oslo School of Architecture and Design seeks PhD Student
Ethnography of Northern Landscapes
Oslo and Kirkenes, Norway
The Oslo School of Architecture and Design seeks a PhD student on the
ethnography of Northern landscapes. The position is for a three-year
duration, and will be based in Oslo and Kirkenes, Norway.
Founded on a conception of landscape as a shared human experience, the
PhD project should aim to bring to the foreground the voices of Northern
residents -indigenous, non-indigenous, and newcomers. Eligible PhD
proposals should aim to develop strategies for mapping the landscapes of
aspirations, disappointments, and desires as the Arctic advances
headlong into massive industrialization, exploration for more resources,
and speculative planning.
Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree within the
interdisciplinary field of social sciences, and/or landscape and design
studies. The successful candidate should be able to formulate and
resolve questions of methodology and theory with regards to the
ethnography of landscape, and have experience and/or training in
ethnographic methods.
Application deadline: Monday, 8 April 2013.

- British Antarctic Survey seeks Ocean and Climate Model Manager
Polar Oceans Program
Cambridge, United Kingdom
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) seeks an ocean and climate model
manager. The position will be based in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Based in the Polar Oceans program, the successful applicant will be part
of a team investigating oceanographic variability in the Southern Ocean
and the Arctic, and its impacts on the earth system. The group runs
sophisticated regional and global oceanographic models (including sea
ice and ice shelf components) to simulate past conditions and also to
predict how the ocean will evolve in the future. Models are run on local
and national supercomputing facilities and generate large volumes of
data, and we also use output from very large models run by external
collaborators.
The position will be responsible for managing all aspects of ocean
modeling infrastructure and writing code to support model users. This
will also include processing and maintaining the large datasets required
to force ocean models, and accessing and pre-processing IPCC climate
model data. Other datasets, such as those produced by satellite remote
sensing, will also require management.
Application deadline: Sunday, 21 April 2013.

- University of Bremen seeks Cooperative Junior Research Group Leader
Remote Sensing of Sea Ice
Bremen, Germany
The University of Bremen seeks a Cooperative Junior Research Group
(CJRG) for a new group on the remote sensing of sea ice.. The position
will be based in Bremen, Germany.
The CJRG programs are funded by an initiative to strengthen the
university's capacity for innovation. The new 'Remote Sensing of Sea
Ice' group will undertake research in the remote sensing of ice in the
cryosphere, complementing and enhancing the existing competencies in sea
ice remote sensing at a variety of institutions. Potential foci for the
new research group embrace the quantification of radiative and
biological processes in ice and snow, taking into account the role of
the ocean and atmosphere. The research objectives, which may be refined
in collaboration with partner institutions, are to test current
understanding of atmospheric and ocean circulation in climate models and
assess the accuracy of the prediction of weather and ice at high
latitudes.
Application deadline: Thursday, 25 April 2013.
