Due to the commencement of a new contract to fund the Directorate in
Tromso, the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) is
seeking a new director to lead the organization to new heights. In more
than six years of activities, APECS has evolved into an international
and interdisciplinary organization for polar early career researchers,
now comprising more than 4,000 members from 75 countries, including
students, postdoctoral researchers, early faculty members, educators,
and others with interests in polar and alpine regions and the
cryosphere. In collaboration with international organizations leading
polar researchers, educators, and funding agencies, APECS aims to
enhance career development opportunities, stimulate research
collaborations, and provide effective development of future leaders in
polar research, education, and outreach to give a continuum of knowledge
for generations to come.

The APECS Directorate is based at the University of Tromso, Norway, in a
vibrant environment with other secretariats and lots of polar
researchers. The appointment will be until 31 December 2014 with the
possibility of an extension. As the fulltime employee of APECS, the
director is tasked with guiding the development and administration of
the organization, along with overseeing and managing all APECS

    University of Bremen seeks Cooperative Junior Research Group Leader
    Remote Sensing of Sea Ice

The University of Bremen seeks a Cooperative Junior Research Group
(CJRG) for a new group on the remote sensing of sea ice. The position
will be based in Bremen, Germany. The application deadline for this
position has been extended to Sunday, 26 May 2013.

The CJRG programs are funded by an initiative to strengthen the
university's capacity for innovation. The new 'Remote Sensing of Sea
Ice' group will undertake research in the remote sensing of ice in the
cryosphere, complementing and enhancing the existing competencies in sea
ice remote sensing at a variety of institutions. Potential foci for the
new research group embrace the quantification of radiative and
biological processes in ice and snow, taking into account the role of
the ocean and atmosphere. The research objectives, which may be refined
in collaboration with partner institutions, are to test current
understanding of atmospheric and ocean circulation in climate models and
assess the accuracy of the prediction of weather and ice at high
latitudes.

    Canadian Arctic Atmospheric Research

A variety of opportunities are available for a project operating in
association with the NSERC CREATE Training Program in Arctic Atmospheric
Science (CREATEAAS). Using measurements from the Polar Environment
Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) at Eureka, Nunavut, and
measurements from other sites around the Arctic and the rest of the
globe, the Probing the Atmosphere of the High Arctic (PAHA) project will
investigate the atmosphere of the Canadian high Arctic.

The high Arctic is changing rapidly and these changes are important,
both within the region and as their influence propagates out to lower
latitudes. Postdoctoral fellows are needed for projects on composition
measurements (University of Toronto), clouds and aerosols (Universite de
Sherbrooke), the polar vortex (University of Saskatchewan), mesospheric
observations (University of New Brunswick), lidar measurements
(Dalhousie University), and satellite validation (University of
Toronto). Depending upon the development and interests of the candidates
and the PAHA project, there may be opportunity for fieldwork at PEARL.
This would entail working in the high Arctic in remote conditions far.
Review of applications is ongoing, and decisions will be made by 15 June
2013.

There are also opportunities for graduate students at both the MSc and
PhD levels for projects broadly similar to the postdoctoral positions.
Most graduate students associated with these projects have the
opportunity to work at PEARL and to participate in outreach activities
in the Arctic and Southern Canada in addition to their regular programs.
Additionally, the CREATE-AAS program has an undergraduate summer
internship program for Arctic Atmospheric Research.
